Patent number: 4311855Abstract: An improved process for manufacturing tetrakis (hydroxymethyl) phosphonium amide condensation product without the formation of a precipitate. Urea or thiourea is added to the tetrakis (hydroxymethyl) phosphonium salt having an anion formed from a dibasic or tribasic or polybasic acid. The said salt is in aqueous solution. The pH of the aqueous solution of said salt is adjusted to the range of 4-6.5 when the urea or thiourea is added to the salt. The proportion of said salt to said urea or thiourea is 1:0.05-0.5 (molar). The sulphuric acid salt is preferred. The process produces an improved aqueous product substantially free of insolubles.Type: GrantFiled: January 25, 1980Date of Patent: January 19, 1982Assignee: Albright & Wilson Ltd.Inventors: Robert Cole, James E. Patent number: 4302479Abstract: When preparing hop extract containing iso-alpha-acids, improved yield of iso-alpha-acids is obtained by contacting a solution of extracted alpha-acids in a water-immiscible non-polar liquid with a sufficiently strong aqueous solution of acid to provide a pH of less than 1 in an aqueous phase that separates from the non-polar liquid. After contacting with the acid, the alpha-acids are isomerized such as by forming alpha acid salts and heating the salts.Type: GrantFiled: May 27, 1980Date of Patent: November 24, 1981Assignee: Albright & Wilson Ltd.Inventors: Anthony M. Humphrey, Anthony Lewis

Patent number: 4239640Abstract: In the manufacture of detergent powders containing alkoxylated alcohols, the problem arises that the alcohols cannot be spray-dried with the rest of the constituents. The invention provides a method of incorporating the alcohols into the spray-dried powder in such a way that staining of the packages does not occur. This is done by adding the alcohols in the form of a solution which combines with the residual water in the powder to form a gel.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 1977Date of Patent: December 16, 1980Assignee: Albright & Wilson Ltd.Inventors: Thomas A. Williams, Douglas E. Mather
-
Patent number: 4191704Abstract: Alkyl sulphates are prepared in a high concentration by mixing together an alkyl sulphuric acid and ammonium or an amine in the presence of sufficient water to maintain the product in the G phase above the minimum concentration at which gel formation is encountered.Type: GrantFiled: June 24, 1977Date of Patent: March 4, 1980Assignee: Albright & Wilson Ltd.Inventors: Douglas E. Mather, Edward T. Messenger, Bryn M. Phillips

Patent number: 4127640Abstract: Wet process phosphoric acid may be purified by solvent extraction to produce a product of greater purity and concentration than has hitherto been attainable by employing an acyclic hexanone, preferably methyl isobutyl ketone as the solvent. Preferably the extraction of the acid into the ketone and the release into water are carried out in 2 actual or theoretical counter-current stages. Alternatively the release may be carried out into an aqueous solution of a base.Type: GrantFiled: August 23, 1976Date of Patent: November 28, 1978Assignee: Albright & Wilson Ltd.Inventor: Thomas A. Williams
