  • Patent number: 7460562
Abstract: An uplink transmission frame transmitted from a base transceiver station to a transcoder rate adaptation unit in a cellular mobile radio network includes in the conventional way an information area in the form of at least one data field and at least one control field, the latter including a subfield representative of the validity of data transmitted in the at least one data field. This subfield is substantially at the start of the information area. This frame structure prevents transmission of invalid speech signals during a call from the cellular network to a fixed network such as the public switched telephone network at the time of handover affecting a mobile station involved in the call.

  • Patent number: 6584807
Abstract: A method of fabricating a component having a crystalline silicon substrate includes the steps of depositing a layer of silica onto a crystalline silicon substrate, this silica layer being doped with dopants, and then treating the substrate. Before the doped silica layer is deposited, a barrier layer is formed on the substrate, consisting of a barrier material opposing diffusion of the dopants. The doped silica layer is deposited onto this barrier layer. The invention finds one particular application in connecting flat bundles of fibers in communication networks.

  • Patent number: 6445920
Abstract: To install a virtual private network (VN) within a given mobile-radio network (MRN), a facility is proposed which is connected to the base stations (BS) and controls the establishment and release of calls between mobile subscribers (MS1 . . . MSX) assigned to the coverage area of the base stations, and a data base (HLR) connected to the facility, which contains a subscriber data set (DS) for each of said mobile subscribers with a first logic data set (LDS) for registering them as subscribers of the mobile-radio network. Each of some of these mobile subscribers (MS1, MS2, MS3) has a second logic data set (LDS-VN) for registering them as subscribers of a virtual private network. In this way, in addition to the data set (LDS) allowing access to the mobile-radio network (MRN) as such, the invention adds to the subscriber data set in the existing data base (HLR) a further data set (LDS-VN), which enables a mobile subscriber to access a virtual private network (VPN).

  • Patent number: 6230008
Abstract: A dual fixed/mobile communications system comprises a set of base stations (BS) connected to a local exchange (LE), and a set of wireless terminal stations (WTS) that communicate, by radio, with the base stations (BS) in order to provide telephone services to telephone sets (T) connected, by means of subscriber lines (LS), to the wireless terminal stations (WTS). These wireless terminal stations (WTS) are inhibited when use is made of cordless telephones (WT) which, in an alternative form, communicate directly with the base stations (BS) when they are located within their area of coverage. The wireless terminal stations (WTS) can also include a radio transceiver RT through which a cordless telephone (WT)1 which is outside the coverage of the base stations (BS), can communicate with them.

  • Patent number: 6202178
Abstract: A method for interleaving data frames, forward error correcting device and modulator including such a device, wherein each data frame to be interleaved is divided into a plurality of codewords, each containing the same amount of data bytes. An overhead extension is added to the codewords and additionally, the extended codewords are applied to an interleave buffer (IB) to be written in matrix-shaped structure of memory cells included in the interleave buffer (IB). This matrix-shaped structure is filled column by column in such a way that each codeword occupies another column. Data bytes are read out of the matrix-shaped structure row by row as a result of which the data frames are interleaved.

  • Patent number: 6128502
Abstract: A method and terminal for use in a telecommunications infrastructure which allows a call directed to a particular subscriber to be taken selectively at one of at least two separate terminals, has the subscriber identify himself to at least one of the terminals through a subscriber identity card, or the like, which can be detected within a limited space associated with the environment of one of the terminals. The subscriber 10 registers all his terminals 11, 12 (home, office, car, hand-held) with a service operator 3. Each terminal which detects the subscriber's proximity in the associated space or environment signals this to the service operator 3. Calls directed to the subscriber are routed to the service operator and from the latter to the terminal which has signaled last, or which is selected according to an algorithm, depending on the sensed signal. In this way, an automatic changeover is accomplished without restricting the subscriber's freedom.

  • Patent number: 6128488
Abstract: A communication system comprising a set of non-geostationary satellites provides communication links between ground stations and terminals, a communication link from a particular station via a satellite terminating at associated terminals in a limited geographical area including the station and providing a communication channel to at least some of the associated terminals. The communication link is switched to another satellite during the process of communication link handover. A communication link between a particular station and its associated terminals includes an additional communication channel which enables advance data to be transmitted between the particular station and a terminal before the latter executes a communication link handover. This data masks any interruption of communication caused by the communication link handover.

  • Patent number: 6104792
Abstract: The invention concerns a method of informing a subscriber in a communication network about the charge for a desired connection, and a service control facility (SCP), a subscriber switching facility, a terminal (TA) and a communication network for carrying out this method. A subscriber signals a call request, which specifies the desired connection, to the communication network via the terminal (TA). The service control facility (SCP), or the subscriber switching facility, then determines tariff data (T) concerning the charge for a desired connection, independently of the establishment of the desired connection. Before the desired connection has been established, the tariff data (T) are sent to the terminal (TA), which displays the data as tariff data to the subscriber, by means of a display unit.

  • Patent number: 6031574
Abstract: To reduce the data in a video-server (SER), a compression of the video data of a video film is performed by coding according to the interframe method (K1). In addition, the video data of predetermined individual video pictures are coded according to the intraframe method (K2), and are stored (MEMO) as entry points parallel to the corresponding interframe-coded video data. When the video film is transmitted, only the interframe-coded video data are transmitted. In response to a request for fast forward or fast backward mode only, the video data of the entry point are transmitted intraframe-coded, and all subsequent video pictures are transmitted interframe-coded.

  • Patent number: 6006066
Abstract: A transmission system with a number of tap devices (1), which are connected to a distribution network (9). Subscriber terminals (11) can be connected to each tap device (1) present in a building (10), by means of a private, in-house network (13); these terminals can send upstream signals (AUF) to a center (8). A tap device (1) has first means (4, 5, 6) which attenuate an upstream signal (AUF) supplied to a second port (3) with a specified attenuation factor (a) and send it to the first port (2). The upstream signal (AUF) is sent out by a subscriber terminal (11) with a signal level which is selected so that after the attenuation, the upstream signal (AUF) has a level specified in the distribution network (9).

  • Patent number: 6003026
Abstract: Method and means for porting an existing application (An) using a relational-database with SQL interface toward a hardware platform (HW2) with a reduced software configuration which does not include an SQL relational-database. The invention emulates an SQL database enabling hardware resources saving and providing a subset of functions for: creating SQL tables and defining fields; storing, modifying and deleting data on created tables, with a type check, retrieving such data by using SQL filters. Functions can be subdivided into levels (M1, M2, M3) in order to: convert an SQL statement, coming from an existing user application (An), into a sequence of elementary interface functions (IF1 . . . IFn), use said interface functions to read/write data files (F1 . . . Fn), process output data to be supplied to the requesting user application (An).

  • Patent number: 5999297
Abstract: In a transmission system, a control circuit (4) receives an input binary sequence (T) representing data to be transmitted. The circuit encodes the sequence using a phase alternation code which differs from the phase inversion duobinary code in that the phase shifts applied to a carrier wave are less than 90 degrees. For this purpose, a semiconductor chip (3) includes a laser transmitter and an electro-absorption modulator having two segments. The chip generates said carrier wave and modulates it using the encoded sequence. An optical fiber (54) conveys the modulated wave. And a detector diode (58) receives the conveyed wave and performs intensity discrimination thereon so as to restore the input binary sequence.
