    Abstract: A Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system for managing and identifying locations for an RFID reader is disclosed. An expected location of a fixed radio frequency identification (RFID) reader is determined. A first signal is transmitted from the reader to a first RFID tag to determine whether the reader is at the expected location. The first tag is a fiducial RFID tag fixed at a first location. In one aspect, the reader receives a first response to the first signal from the first tag. The first response identifies the first location of the first tag. The first location is compared to the expected location. If the first location and the expected location are different, an alarm is triggered.

Another embodiment of the invention relates to forming a display along a length of a flexible layer wherein a slurry containing a plurality of elements with circuit elements thereon washes over the flexible layer and slides into recessed regions or holes found in the flexible layer. Interconnect is then deposited thereon. In another embodiment, interconnect is placed on the flexible layer followed by a slurry containing a plurality of elements.

    Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for configuring antennae of radio frequency identification reader systems. In one aspect of an embodiment, a radio frequency identification (RFID) reader system, includes: a receiver; a radio frequency (RF) source for signal transmission; and a switch matrix coupled with the receiver and the radio frequency sources to selectively couple the receiver and the radio frequency source to a plurality of non-collocated antennae. When in a first mode, the switch matrix connects the radio frequency source to a first one of the antennae for signal transmission and the receiver to a second one of the antennae for signal reception; and when in a second mode, the switch matrix connects the first one of the antennae for signal reception and, in one example, the second one or another one of the antennae to the RF source for signal transmission.

    Abstract: Methods for making electronic devices with small functional elements supported on a carrier are presented. One method of making an electronic assembly is by first providing the following: a web of flexible material having a plurality of recesses, where each of the recesses containing an RFID chip, a flexible substrate having antennas, straps from the web by a web process, where each of the straps includes at least one RFID chip and a portion of the flexible material. The electronic assembly is formed by attaching the straps to the antennas so that each of the straps is coupled to one of the antennas and the density of the RFID chips on the web is higher than a density of the antennas on the flexible substrate. Other methods of making electronic devices with small functional elements supported on a carrier are disclosed.

    Abstract: Apparatuses and methods for forming displays are claimed. This invention relates to a display which may be conformal and which can receive information in order to alter or configure the display. In one embodiment, a flexible layer may be made to receive an array of blocks which drive a display material to provide an alterable or configurable display. This display is coupled to a receiver which receives data and drives the data onto the blocks causing the display to change. The receiver (and blocks) may be powered by a signal from a transmitter which beams the information to the receiver. The receiver in turn controls the update of the display information on the display. Another embodiment of the invention has a receiver coupled to each block. The receiver also may be independent from the block and may be deposited onto the flexible layer.

In one example, the receiver of the RFID reader compares a portion of the signals from the radio frequency source with the received signal from the directional coupler to receive data from RF tags.

    Abstract: A flexible display device has one or more flexible electrode assemblies. Each of the electrode assemblies includes a hierarchical control arrangement for selectively activating electrodes of the display device. The hierarchical control arrangement includes high-level control elements and low-level control elements, each of the high-level control elements being operatively coupled to respective subsets of the low-level control elements, which in turn are coupled to respective groups of the electrodes. Exemplary control elements are microstructure elements containing imbedded microprocessors or integrated circuits. The use of a hierarchical control arrangement results in data signals having to pass through fewer control elements when compared with single-level arrangements. This increases operation speed and reduces power losses due to voltage drops across control elements. In addition, the number of connections to device(s) external to the display may thereby be reduced.

    Abstract: An identification system includes a reader and one or more tags. The reader identifies tags such as radio frequency (RF) tags. The system divides a number space into n bins, wherein each bin is associated with m unique bits of the number space, and the number space contains the identification codes of the tags. A command is issued to test v bits of the number space. A response is received from a tag, wherein the response occurs when a first portion of an identification code of the tag matches the v bits of the number space. A timing of the response corresponds to a particular bin and m unique bits associated with the particular bin correspond to a second portion of the identification code.

    Abstract: The disclosed embodiments of the present invention are used to permanently disable or destruct an RFID so that it is no longer possible to read some or all of the data encoded on the RFID tag. In one method for disabling data on a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag, an RFID tag is identified and its identity is confirmed. Verification that a prerequisite event has occurred is obtained, occurrence of which is required prior to disablement of the data. A destruct instruction is transmitted to the RFID tag. The RFID tag verifies that the destruct instruction is valid and disables the data upon verifying validity of the destruct instruction. The tag may disable the data by erasing the data, disabling the data, auto-destructing, or performing any operation that makes the data unreadable.

In one example of the invention, the substrate is exposed to a surface treatment fluid to create a surface on the substrate which has a selected one of a hydrophilic or a hydrophobic nature, and a slurry is dispensed over the substrate. The slurry includes a fluid and a plurality of elements (each of which includes a functional component). Each of the plurality of elements is designed to be received by a receptor region on the substrate. The dispensing of the slurry with the fluid occurs after the substrate is exposed to the surface treatment fluid, and the fluid is the selected one of a hydrophilic or a hydrophobic nature. In another example of the invention, a plurality of elements is exposed to a surface treatment fluid to create surfaces on the elements having a selected one of a hydrophilic or a hydrophobic nature.
