    Abstract: A regulator system for both the Diesel and the electric portions of a Diesel electric locomotive allowing more reliable operation at all locomotive speeds. Said regulator has a regulator to regulate the electric power by varying the excitation (43) of the main generator by means of orders coming from a driver control (1, 8) which set a reference current level and (17) a voltage reference level (19) for the main generator and a Diesel engine gas oil reference level (18). These levels are compared with measurements of true corresponding values (24, 30, 27) and orders (43) for increasing or decreasing excitation are delivered so that the excitation of the main generator remains inside the scope delimited by the various reference levels and a Diesel power regulator which sends out orders to increase or decrease the gas oil injection in accordance with a predetermined Diesel engine speed/injection law and in comparison with the true measurements of the injection and of the Diesel engine speed.

    Abstract: Chunks of animal matter with 60% moisture content are fed into a cooker (1) via an inlet (3). Steam at 150.degree. C. is fed into a double skin via an inlet (6) and condenses to leave as water via an outlet (7). The application of heat to the animal matter causes greasy steam to be given off therefrom which leaves the cooker via an outlet (10). The remaining animal solids leave the cooker via an outlet (4) where they have a moisture content of 10%. The greasy steam is condensed in a condenser (19) and greasy steam condensate is discarded via an overflow (36). In the present installation, the major portion of the heat released by condensing the greasy steam is recovered and recycled, thereby reducing the energy requirements of the installation as a whole.

    Abstract: A motor-pump unit for submerging down a well, e.g. an oil well, comprises a motor portion driving a pump portion. The motor portion is filled with fluid to prevent ingress of the surrounding medium which the pump portion pumps. The fluid is maintained at a higher pressure than the surrounding medium by including a flexible tank filled with fluid and in communication with the fluid in the motor portion. The flexible tank is compressed both by the surrounding medium and by resilient compression means so that the pressure inside the motor is higher than the surrounding pressure, thereby ensuring any leakage is outwardly from the motor. Down the well the temperature rises causing the fluid to expand, so the flexible tank is left substantially empty when the unit is prepared at the surface prior to lowering.

    Abstract: The diffuser is symmetrical about an axis AA' and has a flared outer wall (2,3) going from an axial inlet to an outlet. The outer wall is divided into an upstream portion (2) and a downstream portion (3) by a circular bleed slot (1) disposed symmetrically about the axis. The profile of the outer wall is such that, in operation, the direction of fluid flow along the outer wall is from the inlet towards the outlet, both over the upstream portion, and over the downstream portion. Further, it is so arranged that the pressure gradient measured at the surface of the wall and along the direction of fluid flow is negative upstream from the bleed slot and positive downstream therefrom. This ensures that only a small percentage of the fluid flow needs to be bled off to achieve desirable flow conditions, thereby providing good diffuser efficiency.

A tubular moving main contact (29) and a tubular moving arcing contact (15) are disposed coaxially with each other and with the fixed contacts, and a cylinder (10) is mounted to co-operate with the fixed main contact during circuit interruption to compress the gas in said first volume.     Abstract: The magnetic circuit (6) of the stator is suspended from resilient suspension bars (26) which are welded both to floating stiffening rings (30) that are firmly mounted on the magnetic circuit, and to some of the stiffening rings (20) of the outer sheath (18). Other casing stiffening rings (22) have openings to allow the suspension bars to pass freely therethrough, and are equipped with stops to limit rotation of the stator in the event of an electrical fault. There are thus two paths for transmitting force between the magnetic circuit and its surrounding sheath, one of which can be optimized for damping the vibrations of normal use, while the other can be optimized for avoiding damage under fault conditions.

The direction (F.sub.1) in which the laminations are rolled in the mill is perpendicular to the axis (7) of the winding.
