Patent number: 9566890Abstract: A movable passenger or grab assist is provided for a vehicle. The movable assist finds particular utility in association with a folding seat in a vehicle having a dual-use area, such as a wheelchair securement area adjacent the folding seat. The assist can be moved between a position wherein it can be grabbed by seated or standing passengers and a position that does not interfere with the dual use area when the seat is folded to a storage position.Type: GrantFiled: February 5, 2015Date of Patent: February 14, 2017Assignee: American Seating CompanyInventors: Keith A. McDowell, Andrew Hartmann

Patent number: 9399413Abstract: A movable track cover includes a cover segment mounted for movement transverse to the direction of tracks that carry a movable seat between first and second positions. The cover segment extends over the track to prevent debris from entering track when the seat is in the first location and the second location and also allows the seat pedestal supporting the movable seat to move along said track. A positioning element is connected to the seat pedestal to move the cover segment from said first position to said second position in coordination with movement of said seat along said track.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 2014Date of Patent: July 26, 2016Assignee: American Seating CompanyInventor: Randy P. Patent number: 9393890Abstract: A movable seat for a transit vehicle has a folding seat cushion that moves between a use position oriented to support a passenger and a storage position. The seat is supported by at least one pedestal that can be mounted in a vehicle for movement with respect to the vehicle, for example to provide space for a mobility aid. The pedestal has a locking mechanism and a lock activator that places the locking mechanism in a locked position to prevent movement of the seat. The seat also has a release mechanism that in one orientation maintains the locking mechanism in a locked position and in a second orientation unlocks the locking mechanism and also prevents placement of the folding seat cushion to the use position when unlocked.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 2014Date of Patent: July 19, 2016Assignee: American Seating CompanyInventor: Randy P. Publication number: 20120146381Abstract: An armrest for arena, stadium, classroom and auditorium seating. The armrest includes a base and an interchangeable arm cap secured to the base. The base defines a rectangular recess sized to telescopically receive a support leg, the recess including vertical crush ribs to retain the support leg within the recess. The arm cap is releasably joined with the base opposite the recess and is interchangeable with multiple different arm caps while the support leg remains inserted in the recess. The arm cap can include any desired finish, and can extend over the interface between the base and the arm cap to provide a clean appearance.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 13, 2010Publication date: June 14, 2012Applicant: AMERICAN SEATING COMPANYInventors: Douglas B. Patent number: 7988231Abstract: A vehicle has an area capable of seating ambulatory passengers and alternatively receiving a mobility aid, such as a wheelchair. The area provides tracks for mounting at least two movable seats that can be moved to provide space in the area for the mobility aid. The tracks are provided with track covers that reduce maintenance requirements by preventing entry of debris. One of the seats is configured to move further than the other whereby the spacing between the seats after moving to accommodate a mobility aid is less than the spacing of the seats when used by ambulatory passengers. The seat configured to move further has a longer track cover, but the tracks are laterally spaced to avoid engagement between the track covers of the two seats whereby they can be moved to be spaced from each other by a distance less than the length of either of the track covers.Type: GrantFiled: August 28, 2009Date of Patent: August 2, 2011Assignee: American Seating CompanyInventor: Randy P. Patent number: 7963730Abstract: Apparatus for securing one or more wheelchairs to a vehicle includes a plurality of straps for holding the wheelchairs to the vehicle. Some of the straps are attached to a movable element that can be moved into or out of the area to be occupied by the wheelchairs. This allows the area to be utilized by other passengers when no wheelchairs are present and also facilitates ingress and egress of the wheelchairs. In the preferred embodiment, movable elements, which carry housings for wheelchair-engaging belts and passenger restraint belts, are mounted to the side wall of the vehicle for pivotal movement about vertical axes between storage positions and operative positions. The apparatus allows an operator to quickly and easily secure or release a passenger in a wheelchair and maintains the integrity of the straps.Type: GrantFiled: April 19, 2006Date of Patent: June 21, 2011Assignee: American Seating CompanyInventors: James A. Patent number: 7717510Abstract: The specification discloses a modular transportation seating assembly that includes a support frame and seats mounted on the frame. The frame includes a seat beam and a cantilever beam. The cantilever beam includes a body and a connector inserted into the body and held together by compressive force. The body has an end defining a plurality of receivers, and the connector includes a plurality of lugs each received within one of said receivers. The seat beam includes a body, a tee nut slidably received within the body, a second connector outside the body, and a fastener intersecuring the two connectors to retain them in position along the length of the body. A single fastener intersecures the connectors on the seat beam and the cantilever beam. The seat includes a flange hooked about the back edge of the seat beam and one or more fasteners connecting the seat to the forward edge of the seat beam.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 2008Date of Patent: May 18, 2010Assignee: American Seating CompanyInventors: Bernard A.
