Patent number: 6079115Abstract: A Yankee hood is disclosed for use in drying wet paper webs. The Yankee will provide a manufacturer to operate at supply temperatures above 1000.degree. F. at lower total energy costs and at increased production. All major components, supply fans, flow concentrator, air flow equalization plenum and gas burner are consolidated and are mounted directly on the device to eliminate the need for additional space requirements. The hood assembly includes an internal high impingement air system which is supported on a floating structural support member. The nozzle impingement system which incorporates a plurality of nozzle boxes will cover approximately a 240.degree. wrap of a typical Yankee cylinder which will be decoupled from its main support end plate members to allow for increases in cross-machine expansion. The support structure for the externally located direct drive motor is designed to eliminate hood vibrations and operate above the natural building frequency.Type: GrantFiled: July 27, 1998Date of Patent: June 27, 2000Assignee: Asea Brown Boveri, Inc.Inventors: Volker J. Patent number: 5588223Abstract: Methods and apparatus are disclosed for restrained paper drying in order to produce high performance paper with enhanced stiffness and, in the process, substantially improve paper properties and reduce fiber usage. The paper web is held in a restrained position on a fabric by air suction imposed from beneath the web and is of sufficient application to prevent shrinkage of the web. The web is simultaneously dried by high velocity, high temperature air or superheated steam. For improved finish properties, the wet paper web may be pressed onto a polished heated metal cylinder with restraint being imposed by gluing.Type: GrantFiled: June 14, 1994Date of Patent: December 31, 1996Assignee: Asea Brown Boveri Inc.Inventor: Hugh G. Patent number: 5531033Abstract: Apparatus is disclosed to control Yankee hood profile along the cylinder surface so as to provide a structurally stable hood having controlled impingement distances at operating temperatures. Radial support of the hot hood internals are located at or near the extremities of the hood wrap and the internal profile along the cylinder wrap is on an adjusted cold shape so that the profile is even when operating temperatures are reached. Thus, the hood is "deformed" (not pre-strained) when cold but, when the operating temperature is reached, it assumes the desired configuration.Type: GrantFiled: October 18, 1994Date of Patent: July 2, 1996Assignee: Asea Brown Boveri, Inc.Inventors: Rodney M. Patent number: 5070967Abstract: A pulse encoder digitally derives a first value of speed at which the cage is moving at any given time. An analog device, such as a tachogenerator, derives the second value of the speed, in analog form, at which the cage is moving at the same time. The two speeds are compared in a comparator to determine the differences therebetween. If the difference exceeds a predetermined limit, an emergency stop is tripped to arrest the motion of the cage.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 1990Date of Patent: December 10, 1991Assignee: Asea Brown Boveri Inc.Inventors: Klaus Katzy, Bruno Leijon, Damir Kudeljan

Patent number: 4937769Abstract: The offset in digital samples of the voltages and currents in a power transmission system following a fault is reduced by subtracting a linear approximation of the exponential component of the transient from the magnitude of the samples to extract the sinusoidal component. The slope and initial ordinate value of the linear approximation are derived from simple calculations using pairs of digital samples spaced one-half cycle apart. Compensated values of the digital samples for the first half cycle of the transient are produced within one-half cycle plus one additional sampling interval from fault inception.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 1988Date of Patent: June 26, 1990Assignee: ASEA Brown Boveri Inc.Inventor: William R. Patent number: 4910863Abstract: A method of making a transformer having an amorphous metal core uses resin coated substrate to reduce amorphous metal contaminants in the transformer coolant. The face of an annealed wound amorphous metal core is covered with a resin coated substrate. The core and resin coated substrate are bonded by pressing the core face. The second face is then done in the same way. The resulting resin coated substrate and transformer core is a unit. The substrate prevents amorphous metal pieces from escaping into the transformer oil and becomes a structural member of the core.Type: GrantFiled: February 1, 1989Date of Patent: March 27, 1990Assignee: Asea Brown Boveri Inc.Inventors: Milan D. Patent number: 4910456Abstract: An electronic watt-hour meter includes a multiplier/integrator circuit which performs "pulse height-pulse width" multiplication of current and voltage and simultaneously integrates the product of this multiplication to generate packets of electrical charge representative of the electrical energy consumed. A first set of switches alternately, at one-half the frequency of a pulse width modulated (PWM) signal having a duty cycle proportional to the current, connects one of a pair of capacitors to be charged by the voltage signal, and the other capacitor to dump charge into an accumulator. When charge in the accumulator reaches a preset value, a pulse is generated representing a predetermined unit of energy. When the first capacitor is connected to the voltage signal by the first set of switches, a second set of switches applies the voltage to the first capacitor in one sense when the PWM signal has one value and in the opposite sense when the PWM signal has a second value.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 1988Date of Patent: March 20, 1990Assignee: ASEA Brown Boveri Inc.Inventor: Robert T.
