  • Patent number: 9697871
Abstract: Aspects of the present disclosure relate to synchronously presenting companion content, such as text content of an electronic book, while recording or presenting narration audio content spoken by a narrator. For example, recorded audio content may be received that corresponds to words of the companion content as spoken by a narrator. The recorded audio content may be received at least substantially in real time as the words are spoken. Content synchronization information for the recorded audio content and the text content may be generated, where the content synchronization information maps portions of the recorded audio content to corresponding portions of the text content. The audio content and the text content may be synchronously presented to a user based at least in part on the content synchronization information.

  • Patent number: 9680945
Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed enabling recommendations of content items based on a difficulty of the content item as well as a skill level of the user. Skill-based content recommendations may be utilized, for example, in recommending content to language learners. Skill-based recommendations may be based on a variety of difficulty metrics of the content item, such as vocabulary and complexity of the language (e.g., words per paragraph, syllables per word, etc.), as well as a variety of skill metrics of the user (e.g., as explicitly provided by the user or implicitly determined based on a user's interaction with content items). Advantageously, such metrics can enable generation of recommendations based on a multi-dimensional difficulty assessment. Further, difficulty metrics, skill metrics, or the relationship between such metrics may be dynamically updated over time based on continued feedback from users, such that recommendations are dynamically improved.

  • Patent number: 9679608
Abstract: Users may have a set duration during which they may consume content, or they may have a variable duration during which they may consume content. A content pacing service is disclosed so that a portion of an item of content may be conveyed in the set duration during which a user is to consume the content. In one embodiment, the rate at which the content is conveyed is increased or decreased so that a reference point in the item of content (e.g., the end of a chapter in an audiobook) is reached approximately when the duration of the user's content consumption ends.

  • Patent number: 9652792
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for generating a tracking code that may be included in an identifier, such as an identifier identifying a network resource or network location, in order to track various information associated with the identifier upon user selection of the identifier. For example, a tracking code may be dynamically generated and appended to an identifier associated with one or more selectable options in a user interface. The tracking code may, for example, identify the section or portion within the user interface that the selectable option is included and/or other information. When a user selects such a selectable option in the user interface, information included in the tracking code may be stored and/or analyzed to determine effectiveness or performance of various selectable options.

  • Patent number: 9632647
Abstract: Digital items of dynamic content may be navigated by content elements associated with the item of dynamic content. In some embodiments, a voice command or natural language query is obtained from a user to whom the item of dynamic content is being presented. The voice command or natural language query may be processed to identify a content element to which the user wishes to navigate. The item of dynamic content may then be presented starting at a presentation position at or near a presentation position with which the content element is associated.

  • Patent number: 9606622
Abstract: Features are disclosed for facilitating content presentation and consumption based on input regarding a user's gaze. Gaze tracking or eye tracking information can be obtained from, e.g., a user-facing camera. A content presentation system can determine whether the user's eyes have closed and how long they have closed, whether the user's gaze is directed at the portion of content currently being presented or at some other location, etc. Based on such determinations, presentation of content may be modified. In some cases, a current presentation position may be changed, highlights may be applied, a special bookmark may be generated, etc.

  • Patent number: 9591071
Abstract: Features are disclosed for managing presentation of content to improve the content consumption experience as a user moves around or when there are multiple users. Based on user positions within a content consumption location and optionally on the layout of the location, presentation of content can be adjusted. The volume of audio content may be raised or lowered based on a user's position. Audio or visual content can be paused or stopped if a user leaves the location or the user's view is obstructed. When multiple users are consuming a content item, one or more users may have priority and any adjustment may be made to first improve the experience of the priority user. In some cases, no user has priority, and adjustments may be made to improve the experience of many or all users.

  • Patent number: 9489360
Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed which facilitate identifying extra substantive material within a content item not included within corresponding companion content items. For example, extra substantive material may include commentary, interviews, or improvisation included within an audio book and not included within a corresponding electronic book. Specifically, an electronic marketplace is disclosed that may analyze two companion content items to determine similarities and differences between the content items. Thereafter, portions that differ between the content items may be further analyzed to determine whether these portions include extra substantive material. Also disclosed is an electronic marketplace for providing information regarding content items, including the existence of extra substantive material within a content item. In some instances, the electronic marketplace may be configured to provide samples of extra content within a content item to a user.

  • Patent number: 9472113
Abstract: A computing device may provide a visual cue to items of content (for example, words in a book) synchronized with the playback of companion content (for example, audio content corresponding to the book). For example, embodiments of the present disclosure are directed to a content playback synchronization system for use with physical books (or other physical media). In an embodiment, the computing device may display a visual cue (for example, an underline, box, dot, cursor, or the like) to identify a current location in textual content of the physical book corresponding to a current output position of companion audio content. As the audio content is presented (i.e., as it “plays back”), the highlight and/or visual cue may be advanced to maintain synchronization between the output position within the audio content and a corresponding position in the physical textual content.

In some embodiments, a score may be determined for each of a set of stories based at least in part on a number of associations between the given story and one or more referents of interest. A graphical representation of the stories may then be presented for display. The graphical representation may include indicia, where each indicium graphically indicates the strength of association between a given story and the one or more referents of interest. The strength of association for a given story may be determined, for example, based at least in part on the determined score for the story.

  • Patent number: 9411422
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for enabling user interaction with content markers of a content item. Content markers can generally correspond to any point of interest in the content item. In one embodiment, a scrub bar is provided enabling user navigation to locations within the content item. As a user utilizes the scrub bar to select a location corresponding to a content marker, a haptic notification is provided to the user indicative of a corresponding point of interest. Thereafter, the user may halt interaction with the scrub bar to being playback of the content item at the point of interest. In another embodiment, a user is enabled to provide input perpendicular to a displayed scrub bar to alternate between multiple available scrub bars and/or points of interest. For example, multiple scrub bars may be provided, each associated with a given type of point of interest.
