  • Patent number: 7484274
Abstract: A pre-cut and preformed free end band and seal of a predetermined length, and method of making and using the same is disclosed. The band is preformed with a substantially closed loop of band material to capture a seal to provide a preassembled band and seal wherein the seal is generally inhibited from being dislodged during packing, shipment, handling and installation. The band and seal are also formed in a manner to facilitate relative positioning of the band and seal as well as placement of a crimping tool relative to the band and seal for optimized crimping of the band and seal.

  • Publication number: 20070084022
Abstract: An improved tool for locking a band clamp, and an improved lock for a band clamp is disclosed. The tool includes a knife body having a knife edge that progressively cuts the free end of the band over a period of time, rather than simultaneously cutting the entire band width. In one embodiment, this is accomplished with a knife edge that is non-linear. The tool further includes a punch with a rounded or hemispherical shaped leading tip that forms an improved locking dimple. The locking dimple forms an improved lock having side walls that are, at least in part, parallel with the walls of the surrounding aperture in the band. By varying the profile of the knife edge, the punch can more fully form an improved locking dimple.

  • Patent number: 5850674
Abstract: A clamping device is provided in the form of a smooth band, cooperating buckle and locking element. The band has a first end which engages the buckle and a second or free end which is positioned about the object or objects to be bundled and passes through the buckle to create overlapping portions of the band within the buckle. The locking element is positioned within the buckle and between the overlapping portions of the band to secure both portions of the band against adjustment of the band periphery.

  • Patent number: 5743310
Abstract: A single-handled banding tool is disclosed, as well as a lock configuration for maintaining tension within a band clamp about a desired object. The handle of the banding tool may be utilized for actuating band loading operations, band tensioning operations, and band locking/cutting operations. During band loading operations and band tensioning operations, the handle pivots about a first pivot point, whereas during band locking/cutting operations, the handle pivots about a second point different from the first point. The two pivot points of the handle are controlled by a toggle system which compares the desired tension set by the operator with the tension in the band. When the ratio of the preset tension to the band tension exceeds a certain, predetermined amount, the toggle system moves the pivot point of the handle from the first pivot point to the second pivot point.

  • Patent number: 5566726
Abstract: The present invention is a novel banding tool which, prior to being used to provide a securing lock for a band clamp, can extract an unspecified length of excess band from the band clamp during a band clamp tightening operation without the banding tool itself expanding. The tightening is accomplished by the cranking or rotating of a tensioning rod for moving a band gripping assembly along the length of the tensioning rod whereby the band gripping assembly extracts a length of band from the band clamp. The present invention also includes a novel manual tension activation assembly for use in cranking the tension rod. The tension activation assembly can be attached to an end of the tensioning rod at a plurality of torque varying positions according to operator convenience and cranking space restrictions. Alternatively, cranking can be provided by a power drive rather than the manual tension activation assembly.

  • Patent number: 5488760
Abstract: A clamping device is provided in the form of a cable tie. The cable tie includes a band having a free end for positioning about an object to be constrained, such as an electrical cable, and a buckle through which the free end of the band section is inserted. In a preferred embodiment, the buckle is movably positioned on the band and, during band periphery adjustment, the locking teeth on the band are in an unlocked position. When the desired band periphery is realized, the locking teeth are placed in a locked position. At this point the clamp may be further tightened with a tightening tool.

  • Patent number: 5483998
Abstract: The present invention provides a band clamp with an improved lock between the band and the buckle of the band clamp. The improved lock is of the type of lock where the band is passed through the buckle and then shaped to form a locking surface that engages the exterior of the buckle to prevent the band from being pulled back through the buckle. Characteristic of the improved lock is that the lateral cross-section of the locking surface is, in one embodiment substantially V-shaped. In other embodiments, the lateral cross-section is substantially U-shaped and substantially .OMEGA.-shaped. In a further embodiment, a banding tool is disclosed for use with a band and a buckle separate from the band, wherein the banding tool forms both a band lock on one band end and a retaining member on the opposite band end such that the retaining member inhibits the non-attached buckle from separating from the band during lock formation.

  • Patent number: 5452523
Abstract: A banding material is disclosed for use as the band in a band clamp. The banding material is provided from a roll of banding material from which a length of the banding material corresponding to the length of the desired band is cut. The length of the band for the band clamp is determined by counting markings on the band which are related to the diameter of an object about which the band clamp is to be fitted. In a preferred embodiment, the markings are .pi. units, or fraction of .pi. units, apart where the diameter of the object is measured in the same units.

  • Patent number: 5303571
Abstract: The present invention involves a method for forming a one-piece band clamp. The band clamp is made by severing band material to a proper width, forming the band material to a desired length, removing a portion of the band to form a void in one end of the band material, inserting a deformation device into the void, and deforming the band material adjacent to the void to form a slot in the band material sufficiently wide to allow insertion of the band body.

  • Patent number: 5129350
Abstract: Apparatus and method are provided for indicating when a predetermined amount of tension has been applied to a band by a banding tool. The apparatus includes a housing, a lever for transferring pressure, and a tension indicator. As a tool handle is rotated to apply tension to a band, pressure is applied to the lever. When the tension applied is substantially equal to the predetermined tension, the lever pivots and activates the indicator, indicating to the operator of the banding tool that sufficient tension has been applied. In one embodiment, the indicator extends into the path of the rotating tool handle, thus preventing the operator from applying further tension to the band.

  • Patent number: 5127446
Abstract: A banding tool (10) is provided for tensioning a band clamp (12) around a protective shield (17). The tool (10) comprises a housing (20) having a hollow handle (22) and a head receptacle (34). Pivotally attached to the housing (20) is a pull up handle (116) and a cutoff handle (154). Received within the hollow handle (22) is a tensioning assembly (24) comprising a force storing device (26), a plunger (28), an adjustment screw (30) and a connecting rod (32). Attached within a head receptacle (34) of the housing (20) is a head (36). The head (36) contains a tension block (46) which is slidably received therein. A tension transfer lever interconnects the assembly (24) and the block (46) for tensioning of the band (13). The force storing device (26) is precompressed to approximately equal the desired tension on the band (13). Once the tension in the band (13) approximately equals the precompression of the force storing device (26), the operator is provided with a signal by the locking of the pull up handle (116).

  • Patent number: 5123456
Abstract: A banding tool (10) is provided to tension and lock a band (12) and a buckle (14) around an object (16). The tool (10) has a housing (18) and a pull-up/cut-off handle (20) for cooperatingly tensioning the band (12). Upon properly tensioning the band (12) around the object (16), the handle (20) is further manipulated to engage a locking/cutting lever (26). The lever (26) engages a head (42) which holds a punch (46) therein and includes a surface (49). The punch (46) first contacts the band (12) to deform and lock the band (12) to itself. The surface (49) of the head (48) then bends and cuts the tail (134) from the band (12).
