At least two different wireless communication protocols are used depending on level of security needed, with greater security needed for exchange of medical device control operation commands and related data between the medical device and its controller or smartphone with medical device control app to avoid nefarious or unintended changes in medical device control. Exchanges of historical data or notifications relating to the medical device and requiring less security can be transmitted to the controller and/or the smartphone or other IDM devices using a different and more commonly used wireless communication protocol that may afford less security.

Methods according to certain embodiments include calculating a spectral spillover spreading parameter for a plurality of fluorophores, pairing each fluorophore with a biomolecule that is specific for a biomarker of a cell in the sample to generate a plurality of fluorophore-biomolecule reagent pairs, generating an adjusted spillover spreading matrix for the fluorophore-biomolecule reagent pairs based on the spectral spillover spreading parameter of each fluorophore and a biomarker classification parameter and identifying an optimal set of fluorophore-biomolecule reagent pairs based on the calculated spillover spreading values from the adjusted spillover spreading matrix. Maldi scores are obtained for a range of sample parameters (e.g. McFarland, dispense volume and number of dispenses). One sample preparation strategy uses multiple dispenses of sample with an intervening drying step, which yields more accurate Maldi scores, particularly for samples at the low range of McFarland values (e.g. below about 2).
