Abstract: A composition and method for the improved deinking of groundwood newsprint is disclosed. The composition comprises an amount, effective for the intended purpose, of: 1) an anionic surfactant, e.g., the ammonium or sodium salts of a sulfated ethoxylate derived from a 12 to 14 carbon linear primary alcohol blend, and 2) a dispersant, e.g., naphthalene-formaldehyde condensates. The method comprises administering a sufficient amount of this combined treatment to a sample of groundwood newsprint for which treatment is desired.
Abstract: Methods for inhibiting deposition of organic contaminants from pulp in pulp and papermaking systems which comprises treating the pulp and papermaking system with an effective amount of a polyalkylene oxide/vinyl acetate graft copolymer.
Abstract: The present invention provides for methods of inhibiting the formation and deposition of barium sulfate on the surfaces of papermaking systems. The inventive treatments comprise adding an effective amount of a poly(amine) compound to the papermaking systems. Representative polymers include polyallylamine, polytrimethylallylammonium chloride and polyvinylamine.

Abstract: A method for enhancing the penetration of cooking liquor into wood chips to form a Kraft pulp which comprises adding to the cooking liquor specific surfactants such as ethoxylated dialkylphenols and ethoxylated alcohols.
Abstract: A method for deinking dry toner electrostatic printed wastepaper is disclosed. The method comprises administering a sufficient amount of a surfactant with a hydrophile/lipophile balance of from about 0.5 to 10.0 to a sample of electrostatic printed wastepaper for which treatment is desired.
Abstract: A composition to control foam in aqueous systems such as those found in papermaking operations comprising a polybutene and at least one surfactant having a melting or pour point below 20.degree. C. The surfactants include polyethylene glycol esters, sorbitan ester, polyoxyalkylene ester, oleic diethanolamide and block copolymers of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide. Due to their low melting point, these surfactants may be blended with the polybutene at room temperature resulting in a foam control composition that is translucent, resistant to deposition and highly effective.

Abstract: A method for deinking dry toner electrostatic printed wastepaper is disclosed. The method includes administering a sufficient amount of an ethoxylated surfactant, propoxylated surfactant, esterified surfactant or alkanolamide surfactant having an HLB value of less than 10.0 to a sample of electrostatic printed wastepaper for which treatment is desired.
Abstract: This invention relates to an improved press felt conditioning treatment which controls the deposition of polymerically flocculated particulate substances in a press felt. The treatment comprises applying to the felt an effective inhibiting amount of a conditioner comprising a combination of a polymethylnaphthalene sulfonate and a type A phosphate ester comprising a nonyl phenol hydrophobe based phosphate ester having between 6 and 10 moles of ethylene oxide and a mono to diester ratio of approximately 60 to 40 or a type B phosphate ester comprising a tridecyl alcohol hydrophobe based phosphate ester having between 6 and 10 moles of ethylene oxide and a mono to diester ratio of about 60 to 40. The use of this combination was found to be especially effective at preventing the deposition of polymerically flocculated particulate substances in a press felt and paper machine.
Abstract: A composition and method for deinking dry toner electrostatic printed wastepaper is disclosed. The composition comprises a combination of: (1) aliphatic petroleum distillates, (2) an alkylphenoxypoly-(ethyleneoxy) ethanol, and (3) an ethoxylated polyoxypropylene glycol. The method comprises administering a sufficient amount of this combination to a sample of electrostatic printed wastepaper for which treatment is desired.
Abstract: In a papermaking operation which utilizes secondary fiber furnish containing hot melt or pressure sensitive adhesive contaminants, a method of inhibiting stickies comprising adding to the pulp slurry at least one surfactant selected from the group consisting of fatty alkanolamides and ethoxylated compounds in addition to a hydrocarbon solvent.
Abstract: The present invention is directed to the use of certain ethoxylated compounds to increase the yield of green liquor semi-chemical pulping processes, the compound have the following structures: ##STR1##

Abstract: A process of making paper by forming a paper furnish comprised of cellulosic fibers or cellulosic fibers and mineral filler material suspended in water, depositing the furnish on a papermaking wire, and forming a sheet out of the solid components of the furnish while carried on the wire, the improvement wherein there is mixed into the furnish, prior to its being deposited on the wire, about 0.50 to 5 percent of cationic starch (based on the dry weight of total solids in the furnish) followed by about 5 to 20 percent of a water soluble carboxymethyl) cellulose (based on the weight of the cationic starch).

Abstract: The present invention involves the use of a polymeric material comprised of polyvinyl alcohol moieties to control the depositing tendency of adhesive materials contained in waste paper and paper products which are being utilized to produce finished paper products. The polyvinyl alcohol is added to the water sprays or showers used on the felts, wires, and press rolls.
Abstract: The present invention is directed to the use of certain ethoxylated compounds to increase the yield of chemical pulping processes, the compound have the following structures: ##STR1## These ethoxylated compounds have molecular weights of from about 500 to about 30,000 the (CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O) comprising from about 20 to 80 percent of the compound; and a, b, and c are each at least 1. The compounds are surface active agents which are added to the cooking liquor. The wood chips are cooked from about one-half and ten hours at a temperature of from about 200 and 500 degrees Fahrenhelt in a liquor including sodium hydroxide, sodium sulfide, and the surface active agent. The wood plug would have a reject level of at least 5% when the chips are cooked in the absence of the surface active agent. The process provides a simultaneous reduction in the level of rejects and an increased yield of pulp.
