  • Patent number: 6899506
Abstract: The present invention relates to a conveyor that includes at least one dogging device. The dogging device includes a plurality of dogging yokes (105). These are arranged to move commonly after one another and in mutually spaced relationship in a transport direction. The conveyor is constructed to move booklets (1) piece-wise in the transport direction, by virtue of a pair of adjacent dogging yokes (105) being arranged to straddle a side edge of a booklet (1) with clearance in the transport direction. The object of the invention is to avoid an oblique or inclined orientation of the booklets between the dogging yokes. According to the invention, there is provided a support device (106) which acts between two adjacent dogging yokes (105) which at least partially bridge the clearance when one side edge of a booklet (1) is straddled by the adjacent dogging yokes (105).

  • Patent number: 6299402
Abstract: According to one aspect, the invention relates to a method of stacking covers for the fabrication of booklets. Each cover includes two cover sheets and an interconnecting spine. Applied to the inner surface of the spine is a binding device that includes a binding agent. The covers are mutually stacked with the inner surface of the spine of one cover lying against the outer surface of the spine of an adjacent cover. According to the invention, a deactivatable separating device is provided between the binding agent and the outer surface of the spine of an adjacent cover, so as to prevent adhesion between the spines of respective covers. According to another aspect of the invention, a cover of this kind is provided with a binding device that includes a binding agent (104) and a separating device (105) disposed on the surface of the binding agent that lies remote from the spine (103), this separating device preferably having a form of woven material affixed to the binding agent (104).

  • Patent number: 6217271
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and to a device for producing booklets, each of which comprises a cover (A) that has two cover sides, a spine between the cover sides, a glue string applied to the inner surface of the spine, and a sheet bundle inserted between the two cover sides. A plurality of covers each having an applied glue string are placed in the immediate vicinity of each other, in a readiness position. The sheet bundle (B) is then combined with one of the covers (A), so as to enclose the sheet bundle in the cover with one side edge of the bundle facing towards the glue string. The glue string is then actuated in an actuator (8), so as to bind this side edge of the bundle (B) to the inner surface of the spine. According to the invention, the sheet bundle (B) is combined with the cover (A) by moving the sheets of the bundle one by one, or as a complete bundle, to the cover in its readiness position by means of a powered transporter.

  • Patent number: 5580097
Abstract: A cover comprising a spine (3), a strip of binding agent (4) connected to the spine, and two cover sides 1, 2) which are connected with the spine by means of a first pair of creasing lines (5, 6) extending parallel to the strip, the cover sides also being provided with a second pair of of creasing lines (7, 8) extending parallel to the strip, which creasing lines are at at short distance from the first pair and along which the cover sides are folded on opening and closing of the booklet, a sheaf of papers (20) being intended to be inserted into the cover with one side edge of the same in contact with the strip, such that on melting and subsequent cooling of the strip, the sheaf of papers will be connected to the spine to form a finished booklet. The second pair of creasing lines are deformed in such a way that when the cover sides of the cover are essentially parallel, the two portions (9, 10) between the two pairs of creasing lines exert an inwardly directed pressure against the not yet melted strip.

  • Patent number: 5556490
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for indicating suitable binding times for a file or files placed in a file binding apparatus. The suitable binding time is comprised of the time (t.sub.0 -t.sub.2 ; t.sub.3 -t.sub.5 ; t.sub.6 -t.sub.8) required to heat the heating plate of the binding apparatus to a predetermined maximum temperature governed by the switch-off temperature (T2) of a thermostat, and the time taken for the heating plate to cool to a similarly predetermined switch-on temperature (T1) of the thermostat, determined by a lower temperature. The suitable binding time is determined by utilizing the switch-off and switch-on temperatures of the thermostat, wherein the thermostat output signal controls an indicating device which indicates the aforesaid suitable binding time.

  • Patent number: 5066183
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for binding sheaves of papers into covers such as to form booklets, each booklet comprising a cover made up of two cover sheets, a spine therebetween, and a binding agent attached to the inside of the spine, as well as a sheaf of papers inserted in the cover, one side edge of the sheaf being connected to the inside of the spine. The binding takes place by means of the binding agent being activated by an activation device such that the edge of the sheaf of papers will be connected to the inside of the spine via the binding agent. Each cover acts on a sensing means, which senses the presence or non-presence of indication means connected to the cover and which actuates means for influencing the further course of the method. The invention also relates to a cover provided with indication means sensed in the above described manner.

  • Patent number: 5062754
Abstract: The invention disclosed is directed to a method, an apparatus for manufacturing and apparatus for using a booklet, folder or wrapper comprising two substantially parallel covers (1,2) united with a spine (3) at crease lines (5,6). A strip (4) of adhesive binder is attached to the inside of the spine (3) and extends only between the crease lines (5,6). The strip of adhesive (4) is intended to be activated to provide adhesion between itself and one edge of a sheaf of sheets of material which are inserted between the covers (2,3). Two opposing longitudinal side edges of the (4a, 4b) of the strip of adhesive (4) are united with the respective covers (1,2) before the sheaf of sheets is inserted between the covers (2,3).

  • Patent number: 4863332
Abstract: In an apparatus for binding loose sheets in one or more folders there is utilized a regulating circuit means where an inserted folder (F) interrupts a light beam to a photodiode (16) which simultaneously starts a time counter (18) and closes the power supply (via 31) to the heating plate (2), wherewith the binding operation is carried out. The time interval of the timing counter is determined in response to the actual values of the width of the folders and the starting temperature of the heating plate. These values are obtained from a width detector (34, 7, 35) and a temperature detector (28), said values being fed into a microcomputer (19) controlling the timer. When the timer has counted down the time interval to zero, it interrupts the power supply to the heating plate (via 31).
