    Abstract: A process for removing acetone from an acetone/methyl acetate/methyl iodide mixture utilizing extractive distillation with water being introduced to the distillation zone above the point of introduction of the mixture and acetic acid being introduced at or above the point of introduction of the mixture. In a preferred embodiment the mixture is subjected to an initial extraction with an aqueous extractant to remove most of the methyl iodide.The process is particularly applicable to removing acetone by-product in carbonylation processes for the production of acetic anhydride.

    Abstract: Sulphonated polyketones are prepared by reacting a linear alternating copolymer of carbon monoxide and one or more olefins (polyketone) with a sulphonating agent (e.g. chlorosulphoric acid) in a solvent (e.g. dichloromethane) at a temperature in the range -20.degree. to +40.degree. C. A molar excess of sulphonating agent is preferably used. The sulphonated polyketone produced contains one or more types of unit of formula--[COC(R.sup.1).sub.2 C(R.sup.1).sub.2 ]--wherein the R.sup.1 groups are independently H, C.sub.1 to C.sub.10 alkyl or SO.sub.3 H with the proviso that at least one R.sub.1 group is SO.sub.3 H.

    Abstract: A process for removing iodide derivatives from liquid acetic acid and/or acetic anhydride comprises contacting the liquid acetic acid and/or acetic anhydride with a strong acid cation exchange resin having from about 4% to about 12% crosslinking, a surface area in the proton exchanged form of less than 10m.sup.2 g.sup.-1 after drying from the water wet state and a surface area of greater than 10m.sup.2 g.sup.-1 after drying from a wet state in which water has been replaced by methanol. The resin has at least one percent of its active sites converted to the silver form preferably from 30 to 70 percent.

    Abstract: An improved liquid-phase process for preparing carboxylic acids having (n+1) carbon atoms by rhodium catalyzed carbonylation of an alcohol having n carbon atoms is provided. The process is particularily suitable for preparing acetic acid from methanol in commercial carbonylation reactors operating at steady-state with a low standing quantity of water (e.g. 0.5 to 5% by weight). The improvement lies in carrying out the carbonylation in the presence of an iodide stabilizer (e.g. lithium iodide) and a Group VI B metal costabiliser. The process can optionally be carried out in the presence of hydrogen.

Compounds of formula (I) where at least one R group is R.sup.2 CO are efficient chiral auxiliaries for a range of asymmetric electrophilic substitution reactions when used in homochiral form. As such they are important tools for synthesising a range of chiral pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and the like.

    Abstract: An improved process for preparing linear interpolymers of olefin(s) (e.g. ethylene) and carbon monoxide (Polyketones) is provided. The process comprises polymerizing the olefin(s) with carbon monoxide in the presence of a palladium catalyst derived from a palladium source, a bidentate amine, phosphine, arsine or stibine of formula (R.sup.1).sub.2 M--R.sup.2 --M(R.sup.1).sub.2 where the M atoms are selected from N, P, As or Sb, the R.sup.1 groups are e.g. C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkyl or phenyl and R.sup.2 is e.g. (CH.sub.2).sub.a where a=2 to 10, and a anion prepared by reacting in a 2:1 molar ratio and substituted salicylic acid and boric acid. The salicylic acid is preferably 4- or 5- substituted with methyl, Cl or Br. Using this particular palladium catalyst leads to high polymer yields than e.g. when unsubstituted salicylic acid is employed.

    Abstract: A process for preparing terpolymer polyketones comprises reacting at least two olefins with carbon monoxide at elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of a catalyst prepared from (a) a source of palladium, (b) a source of an anion which either does not coordinate with palladium or is less strongly coordinating to palladium than both carbon monoxide and the olefin(s) used and (c) a bisphosphine of formula (R.sup.1).sub.2 P--R--P(R.sup.1).sub.2 wherein R.sup.1 is an optionally polar substituted aromatic hydrocarbyl group and R is a divalent organic bridging group of formula --(CH.sub.2).sub.n --where n=2 to 8 and (d) a 1,4 quinone. The process is characterized by being carried out in a solvent comprising a mixture of an aprotic polar solvent and from 0.0001 to 0.5% by weight water. The particular solvent system used is especially useful for preparing terpolymer polyketones of high molecular weight.
