Patent number: 6598607Abstract: A non-combustible smoking article is provided in which a flavor generating medium, such as a commercially available cigarette, is heated with a fuel element including a liquid fuel therein to generate flavors or other components in vapor or aerosol form. A reusable fuel element is inserted in one end of a tubular member and a flavor generating medium, such as a cigarette, is positioned in the opposite end of the tubular member. Spacing between the fuel element and the cigarette is sufficient so that the cigarette is not lit but hot gases come into contact with tobacco or the like in the cigarette to vaporize the flavor components therein.Type: GrantFiled: October 24, 2001Date of Patent: July 29, 2003Assignee: Brown & Williamson Tobacco CorporationInventors: Kayyani C. Publication number: 20030098030Abstract: A cigarette filter that includes a multiple section filter which reduces the level of predetermined smoke constituents. The filter consists of a fibrous filter plug located at the mouth-end of the cigarette, a section containing a selective adsorbent material, and a section containing a general adsorbent material. The selective adsorbent material, such as a phenol-formaldehyde resin matrix surface-functionalized with mainly primary and secondary amine functional groups, removes specific smoke constituents from the tobacco smoke. The general adsorbent material, such as activated charcoal, is preferably capable of adsorbing a range of chemical compounds without a high degree of specificity. Structurally, the fibrous filter plug, the selective adsorbent section, and the general adsorbent section are co-axially aligned in tandem.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 24, 2002Publication date: May 29, 2003Applicant: Brown & Williamson Tobacco CorporationInventors: James N. Patent number: 6564967Abstract: A child resistant tablet dispenser is disclosed wherein the dispenser is comprised of a body portion and a release mechanism. The body portion may be hollow and cylindrical and contain therein a plurality of tablets in a tablet magazine. The tablets may be individually dispensed through the release mechanism which has a child resistant dispenser requiring multiple actions before an individual tablet may be dispensed. The multiple actions required on the release mechanism may be in two different planes thereby requiring movement in a horizontal plane and movement in a vertical plane in order to release a slide actuator and then depress a release button for opening of the release mechanism lid. Upon opening of the lid, an individual tablet is forced outward from the cylinder of the body portion and dispensed.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 2001Date of Patent: May 20, 2003Assignee: Brown & Williamson Tobacco CorporationInventors: Don Stringfield, John F. Patent number: 6536442Abstract: A lighter integral with a smoking article includes a gas burner and a tube for receiving a smokable material, such as a cigarette. The gas burner generates a stable pre-mixed flame that is used to heat the material to be smoked. The smokable material may be separated from the heat source, such as a flame or a catalyst bed, by a barrier that allows heat to flow between the heat source and an interior portion of the tube. Various configurations of barriers are provided. Furthermore, an attachment is provided that allows for the conversion of a conventional lighter into a lighter that may be integrally combined with a smoking article.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 2000Date of Patent: March 25, 2003Assignee: Brown & Williamson Tobacco CorporationInventors: Frank K. Patent number: 6475288Abstract: A process for the manufacture of a homogeneous fibriform element comprising a smoke-modifying agent. In the process a mixture comprising a solution of a polysaccharide (an alginate for example) and a smoke-modifying agent (menthol for example) is fed through a nozzle and a jet of the mixture issuing from the nozzle is brought into contact with a solution containing multivalent cations (such as calcium ions). Solidification of the mixture is thus effected. In a second aspect of the invention, a fibriform element is manufactured by passing a thread through a mixture comprising a solution of a polysaccharide and a smoke-modifying agent whereby the thread is coated with the mixture. The coated thread is brought into contact with a solution containing multivalent cations thus to effect solidification of the mixture on the thread. A fibriform element as manufactured by the inventive process and a smoking article comprising such a fibriform element are also provided for.Type: GrantFiled: February 12, 2001Date of Patent: November 5, 2002Assignee: Brown & Williamson Tobacco CorporationInventor: Richard Oliver

Patent number: 6427423Abstract: The present invention is directed toward an apparatus for insertion of coupons or other material into hinge lid pack cigarettes. The apparatus of the present invention inserts the coupons in between the foil wrapped pack of cigarettes and the inner frame portion of the hinged lid pack. The apparatus of the present invention is comprised of a coupon inserter, a third wheel pocket and rail system wherein the pockets travel rotationally with the third wheel after receiving a coupon and thereafter allow the foil wrapped cigarette pack to be inserted thereon. The rail of the hinged lid pack assembly machine has been modified to receive these coupons in conjunction with the coupon multistage inserter or dispenser and all act cooperatively such that the coupons are inserted in timed relation to the rotational speed of the third wheel of the packager.Type: GrantFiled: October 30, 2000Date of Patent: August 6, 2002Assignee: Brown & Williamson Tobacco CorporationInventors: Tom Hinzman, Mark Baker, Rickey Johnson, Weston Johnson
