Publication number: 20060080841Abstract: A fixed-blade knife includes a unitary blade having an implement, a tang, and a pivot region between the implement and the tang. The unitary blade is disposed between a pair of parallel and spaced-apart side pieces that pivot to cover or expose the implement. In the pivoted position wherein the implement is exposed, the side pieces form part of the handle that is used to grasp the knife. A locking structure locks the side pieces in a selectable position, and a limit structure prevents overrotation of the side pieces.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 2, 2005Publication date: April 20, 2006Applicant: Buck Knives, Inc.Inventors: Brandon Hatcher, Stephen Hull, Dean Hussey, Eric Linn, Robert Pinto, Michael Williams, Mathew Hlavac

Publication number: 20050172497Abstract: Disclosed is a folding knife that includes a handle with opposing sides, wherein the opposing sides define an opening for housing a blade when the blade is in a folded position. The folding knife further includes a protrusion that extends from one of the handle opposing sides into the opening for housing the blade. A blade is pivotally connected to the housing and the blade has a female portion aligned in the same plane as the blade. The folding knife also includes a locking mechanism that is pivotally connected to the housing for locking the blade in the closed position, the locking mechanism has a male portion for mating with the blade female portion when the blade is in a closed position. The locking mechanism further includes a recess for mating with the protrusion that extends from one of the handle opposing sides when the locking mechanism is in a locked position.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 11, 2004Publication date: August 11, 2005Applicant: Buck Knives, Inc.Inventors: Eric Linn, Paul Naranjo

Publication number: 20040244205Abstract: A spring assist folding knife and method of biasing a blade in a folding knife. The folding knife includes a blade, liner, and handle. The blade includes a first recess for receiving a pivot pin. The blade includes a second recess offset from the axis of rotation. A latch cam having an offset pin is located relative to the second recess. The liner includes an arcuate slot in which the offset pin of the latch cam is located. The arcuate slot within the liner or handle also includes a convex extension. A spring is configured to provide a force in the direction of blade opening and provides the force throughout the entire range of blade motion. The spring applies its force to the offset pin to bias the blade in the closed position until the blade reaches a predetermined angle. Then the spring biases the blade to the open position.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 6, 2004Publication date: December 9, 2004Applicant: Buck Knives, Inc.Inventors: Eric Linn, Paul Naranjo, Paul Kassa, Brandon Hatcher

Patent number: 6594906Abstract: A knife has an implement lying in an implement plane and an attachment structure lying in the implement plane. The attachment structure is integral with the knife body with a fixed portion extending laterally from the top of the knife body. A gate is pivotably attached to a first part of the fixed portion of the attachment structure and pivotable in the implement plane between a closed position and an open position. When the gate is opened, the attachment may be clipped to another article, and the knife is releasably attached to the other article when the gate is closed.Type: GrantFiled: January 10, 2001Date of Patent: July 22, 2003Assignee: Buck Knives, Inc.Inventors: Kimiyuki Sakai, Stephen J. Hull

Patent number: 6487740Abstract: A hand tool such as a knife or a combination tool includes multiple blades, each independently rotatable on a common axle between a closed position within a handle of the tool and an open position extending from the handle. Each blade is positively but releasably locked into its open position. Those blades which remain closed are biased toward the closed position when the opened blade is locked into position and also as it is opened and closed. A single locking, releasing, and biasing mechanism serves all of the blades in one handle.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 2001Date of Patent: December 3, 2002Assignee: Buck Knives, Inc.Inventors: Brett P. Seber, Randolph J. Morton, Gabriel Alejandro Draguicevich, Roy L. Helton, Jr., Gregory F. Rubin

Patent number: 6470522Abstract: A folding combination tool includes a jaw mechanism with a first jaw piece having a first lug attachment, a second jaw piece having a second lug attachment, and a jaw pivot that joins the first jaw piece and the second jaw piece so that the first jaw piece and the second jaw piece may pivot with respect to each other in a pivot plane. A first handle is pivotably attached to the first lug attachment by a first handle pivot lying perpendicular to the pivot plane, so that the first handle is pivotable about the jaw mechanism in the pivot plane. A second handle is pivotably attached to the second lug attachment by a second handle pivot lying perpendicular to the pivot plane, so that the second handle is pivotable about the jaw mechanism in the pivot plane. A first lug attachment spacing of the first lug attachment from the jaw pivot is greater than a second lug attachment spacing of the second lug attachment from the jaw pivot, so that the handles asymmetrically fold around the jaw mechanism.Type: GrantFiled: January 10, 2001Date of Patent: October 29, 2002Assignee: Buck Knives, Inc.Inventors: Jason D. Patent number: 6427333Abstract: A knife-and-sheath combination includes a knife with a blade having two opposing broad faces and an opening through the blade extending between the broad faces, and a handle extending from the blade. The combination also includes a sheath including a sheath body having a receptacle sized to receive the blade therein, and a positive lock operable to lock the knife to the sheath. The positive lock includes a locking element engagable to the opening in the blade of the knife, and a lock release accessible to a user of the knife-and-sheath combination, the lock release being operable to disengage the locking element from the opening in the blade of the knife.Type: GrantFiled: January 14, 2000Date of Patent: August 6, 2002Assignee: Buck Knives, Inc.Inventors: Jason D. Patent number: 6357068Abstract: A combination tool includes a tool head having a jaw mechanism with two jaws lying in a tool head plane. A first handle is pivotably attached to the jaw mechanism and rotatable in a first direction about a first pivot axle lying in the tool head plane, between a nested position wherein the first handle lies coplanar with and adjacent to the jaw mechanism and a deployed position wherein the first handle is coplanar with and remote from the jaw mechanism. A second handle is pivotably attached to the jaw mechanism and rotatable in a second direction, opposite to the first direction, about a second pivot axle lying in the tool head plane, between a nested position wherein the second handle lies coplanar with and adjacent to the jaw mechanism and a deployed position wherein the second handle is coplanar with and remote from the jaw mechanism.Type: GrantFiled: January 11, 1996Date of Patent: March 19, 2002Assignee: Buck Knives, Inc.Inventors: Brett P. Patent number: 6088861Abstract: A tool includes a body with implements rotatably deployed from the body. The implements have notches in their bases corresponding to open and closed positions, which are engagable by a locking plate of the body. A locking lever rotatably mounted on the body includes a lock actuator plate which does not engage the locking plate when the locking lever is rotated to an unlocked position but does engage the locking plate when the locking lever is rotated to a locked position. The engagement of the locking plate causes it to contact the notches of the implement base, thereby locking the implement either open or closed. The body may be inserted into a handle, such as the handle of a combination tool, so that the operation of the locking lever also locks the body into the handle.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 1999Date of Patent: July 18, 2000Assignee: Buck Knives, Inc.Inventors: George Christensen Sessions, Dave Roger Nelson, Steven J.
