Abstract: A method for bleaching pulp includes introducing a bleaching liquor in at least one refiner to contact lignocellulosic particulates processed therein in the formation of pulp, wherein the bleaching liquor includes at least one peroxide, magnesium sulfate, caustic hydroxide, at least one chelating agent, and less than 0.1%, or less than 0.01%, or less than 0.001% by weight silicate based on dry weight of the lignocellulosic particulates. Magnesium perhydroxide is generated in situ in the refining system with bleaching of the particulates during refining and reduced scale occurs by use of the silicate or essentially silicate free conditions. A free or essentially silicate-free bleaching liquor which can provide highly brightened pulps also is described.

Abstract: Methods and systems for making paper and controlling wet strength resin fouling of paper-making felt are provided. Wet strength resin fouling, including degradation, clogging, changes in absorption, or a combination thereof, can be controlled by applying a formulation that contains an organic acid, to the felt, before a paper-making pulp containing wet strength resin is applied to the felt. The formulation can include, for example, an alpha-hydroxy acid such as glycolic acid. In addition to the at least one organic acid, the formulation can include various surfactants, polymers, amines, emulsifiers, wetting agents, and/or other additives.

Abstract: A method is provided for controlling organic contaminants, such as xylans, pitch or both, that interfere with bleaching of fibers and/or cause other interference(s) in papermaking systems. The method includes contacting fibers before any bleaching thereof with a composition which contains a hemicellulolytic enzyme and an organic contaminant removal adjuvant to liberate the organic contaminants from the fibers. The treated fibers can then be bleached and further used, for example, in making paper. The present invention also relates to the treatment compositions and to paper products made with fiber materials treated with these compositions. A method of enhancing enzymatic degradation of a substrate as well as formulations and systems for achieving the same are also provided. Various substrates can be degraded or otherwise processed, including biomass, paper mill sludge, and animal hides. Enzymatic degradation can be enhanced by including one or more polymeric surfactants.

Abstract: A method and composition is described for controlling the growth of fouling materials, such as scale, in aqueous systems using a tagged (fluorescent) polymer. The tagged polymer can be a fluorescent polymer which has at least one fluorescent monomeric unit derived from a fluorophore which has at least one terminal end comprising an olefinic group. The method of controlling the growth of at least one fouling material in an aqueous system can include the steps of adding the tagged polymer to the aqueous system to be treated, fluorometrically monitoring the concentration of the tagged polymer, and adjusting, as needed, the concentration of the tagged polymer and proportionally used water treatment compound or compounds effective to control the growth of at least one fouling material. The adjustment of pH before determination of the fluorescence signal can be employed to increase sensitivity of the fluorophore and minimize background interference.
