  • Patent number: 9650787
Abstract: A single layer foldable reinforced bullnose hip and ridge cap shingle is cut from a single layer web of shingle material. The hip and ridge cap shingle includes an exposed portion, a tapered portion, and a portion in between that will be folded to form a bullnose edge. Two spaced apart perforated fold lines extend transversely across the shingle and two spaced apart transversely extending strips of reinforcing scrim material flank the perforated fold lines. To form a bullnose hip or ridge cap shingle, the shingle is folded first along one of the perforated fold lines and again along the other perforated fold line. This creates an exposed edge portion that is four layers thick and this extreme edge takes on a pleasant rounded bullnose appearance covered with granules. The reinforcing scrim is located at the edge and reinforces the bullnose edge to prevent cracking at the fold.

  • Patent number: 9555439
Abstract: A high speed granule delivery system and method is disclosed for dispensing granules in intermittent patterns onto a moving asphalt coated strip in the manufacture of roofing shingles. The system includes a granule hopper and a rotationally indexable pocket wheel having an alternating series of pockets and lands formed into the circumference thereof, and which is positioned adjacent a nozzle in the bottom of the hopper. Upper and lower side portions of the pocket wheel define and are exposed to upper and lower extents of a store of granules. A seal on the bottom of the lower extent of the store of granules seals against the raised lands as the wheel is indexed. In use, the pockets of the pocket wheel drive through and are filled with granules in the store of granules. As each pocket is indexed beyond the seal, it is exposed to the moving asphalt coated strip below and its granules fall onto the strip to be embedded in the hot tacky asphalt.

  • Patent number: 9556383
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for oxidizing asphalt which comprises dispersing an oxygen containing gas throughout an asphalt flux in an oxidation zone while the asphalt flux is maintained at a temperature which is within the range of about 400° F. to 550° F., wherein the oxygen containing gas is introduced into the oxidation zone through a recycle loop. The recycle loop pumps asphalt flux from the oxidation zone and reintroduces the asphalt flux into the oxidation zone as oxygen enhanced asphalt flux. The recycle loop will typically include a pump which pulls the asphalt flux from the oxidation zone and which pumps the oxygen enhanced asphalt flux into the oxidation zone, and wherein the oxygen containing gas is injected into the recycle loop at a point before the asphalt flux enters into the pump.

  • Patent number: 9523202
Abstract: Metal roofing panels have a forward edge portion with a downwardly extending skirt and return flange and a rear edge or headlap portion with an upwardly open channel and a locking tab extending over a portion of the upwardly open channel. A method of installing the roofing panels includes nailing a lower course of panels in end-to-end overlapping relationship to a roof deck. The forward edge portions of panels in the next higher course of panels are then pressed downwardly into the upwardly open channels of the lower course panels. The return flanges of the upper course panels snap beneath the locking tabs of the upwardly open channels thus locking the panels together and forming a watertight connection between courses of panels.

  • Patent number: 9498795
Abstract: A high speed granule delivery system and method for dispensing granules in intermittent patterns onto a moving asphalt coated substrate includes a granule hopper and a rotationally indexable pocket wheel in the bottom of the hopper. A series of pockets are formed in the circumference of the wheel and separated by raised lands. A seal on the bottom of the hopper seals against the raised lands as the pockets are filled with granules during rotation of the pocket wheel through the hopper. As each pocket is indexed beyond the seal, it is exposed to the moving asphalt coated substrate below and its granules fall onto the substrate to be embedded in the hot tacky asphalt. The speed at which the wheel is indexed is coordinated with the speed of the asphalt coated substrate to form well defined patterns of granules at high production rates.

  • Patent number: 9493654
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for preparing an industrial asphalt comprising sparging an oxygen containing gas through an asphalt flux in the presence of 0.25 weight percent to about 12 weight percent of a highly saturated rubbery polymer at a temperature within the range of about 400° F. to about 550° F. for a period of time which is sufficient to increase the softening point of the asphalt flux to a value which is within the range of 185° F. to 250° F. and a penetration value of at least 15 dmm to produce the industrial asphalt. The highly saturated rubbery polymer can be a styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene block copolymer rubber or a highly saturated styrene-ethylene/propylene-styrene block copolymer rubber.
