Patent number: 9099730Abstract: A storage battery includes a generally rectangular container having opposed side walls, end walls, a bottom wall and an open top defining a container interior. The container interior is divided into a plurality of cells supporting positive and negative plates. The plates include aligned positive lugs and aligned negative lugs. A pair of conductive straps are provided. One of the straps interconnects the positive lugs while the other strap interconnects the negative lugs. A tombstone extends from each of the straps. Each tombstone is located at a position spaced inwardly from the container walls. A pair of battery terminals are supported within the container end walls. Each battery terminal is directly connected to one of the tombstones. The battery terminals are positioned between the tombstone and the container wall and include a termination location adjacent the container wall for direct disconnectable termination thereat. A cover is provided for enclosing the open end of the container.Type: GrantFiled: January 21, 2010Date of Patent: August 4, 2015Assignee: C&D Technologies, Inc.Inventors: David Thuerk, Guy Pfeifer, Mark Inkmann, Matthew Bielawski

Patent number: 8372537Abstract: A battery with a threaded battery terminal for accommodating a threaded terminal bolt is provided. The threaded battery terminal includes a bushing having an axial bore extending between an open end and a closed end; and an insert having a longitudinal axis and a threaded opening extending along the longitudinal axis between an open end and a back wall. The terminal bolt is threadably received in the threaded opening and the back wall of the insert has sufficient strength to cause an overlong bolt to break upon continued threaded insertion subsequent to the bolt contacting the back wall.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 2008Date of Patent: February 12, 2013Assignee: C&D Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Matthew Bielawski, David Thuerk, Guy Pfeifer, Mark Inkmann

Patent number: 8263257Abstract: A battery with a pair of handle assemblies that includes a battery casing having a pair of lips extending outwardly from the end walls near the opening in the battery casing. Each lip has a recessed portion with a slot defined by the end wall and a slot side wall. The battery casing also has a pair of protrusions on each of the end walls located below the slot. Each of the handle assemblies has a handle and an attachment structure that includes a substantially flat, rectangular base and a side wall. The back of the side wall has a cavity and a channel extending from an open end at the top edge to a closed end proximate the cavity. The handle includes a strap connected to the side wall on a first end and a loop on the second end.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 2008Date of Patent: September 11, 2012Assignee: C&D Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Matthew Bielawski, Mark Inkmann, Guy Pfeifer, David Thuerk

Publication number: 20020015880Abstract: A sealed-lead acid battery system for standby applications is arranged in a vertically stacked array utilizing molded plastic modules to construct a battery. The modules may support a plurality of battery cells either mounted horizontally (with the plates parallel to module bottom) or vertically (with the plates perpendicular to module bottom). The modules include an interconnecting structure to permit interconnecting vertical stacking of the modules. The structural plastic modules are capable of being stacked several tiers high and withstanding seismic accelerations in accordance with industry seismic codes.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 18, 2001Publication date: February 7, 2002Applicant: C&D Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Drew Heimer

Patent number: 6021612Abstract: A sound absorbing hollow core panel of structural material based on Helmholtz resonator properties consisting of two exterior skins connected by spacers or structural connections and bounded by perimeter skins or structural connections with internal cavity or cavities that communicate with the exterior sound field through a plurality of orifices in one or both exterior skins as well as the perimeter of the panel and that have a plurality of Helmoltz resonators of different shapes and sizes tuned to specific frequencies that control the sound absorption characteristics of the hollow core panel. The internal cavity or cavities are defined by external skins and perimeters as well as internal structural elements acting as interior dividers, interior sub-volumes and perimeter structures, each of which may contain a plurality of orifices for sound communication forming a sequence of first order Helmholtz acoustical resonators with respective natural frequencies for sound absorption.Type: GrantFiled: July 16, 1996Date of Patent: February 8, 2000Assignee: C&D Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Stanley E. Patent number: 5851695Abstract: A lead-acid cell includes a case, positive and negative plates within the case, microporous separator material between adjacent plates and electrolyte in a starved amount, with the case having jar and covers joined by a weldment along overlapping cover and jars. The positive plates include a grid frame with an intermediate member extending between spaced apart generally peripheral portions of the frame, with pasted active material on the grid frame separated substantially into two portions by the intermediate member. Compressive force is adjustably continuously applied to the positive and negative plates within the case. The plates are suspended within the case at positions removed from the wall of the case, while plate growth is permitted in a manner that plate shorting is avoided.Type: GrantFiled: February 10, 1992Date of Patent: December 22, 1998Assignee: C & D Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Sudhan S.
