    Abstract: A continuous gear hinge, having extruded aluminum leaves and an extruded aluminum cap which holds the leaves together at meshed gear segments on the leaves, has the capacity to establish a seal between the door and hinge jamb to which it is attached. That seal derives from intumescent strips which lie in recesses that open out of the of the leaves. In the presence of a fire, the intumescent material, the strips of which extend the full length of the hinge, expands and bonds to the door and hinge jamb to not only seal the space between the two, but also to secure the door should the hinge lose its capacity to hold the door.

    Abstract: A barn door includes vertical members at its ends and lateral members extended between the vertical members which the vertical and lateral members being interlocked where they meet. To this end, the vertical members are channel-shaped, each having a front and a rear wall along with a end wall that connects the front and rear walls, it being formed integral with both. Each vertical member has vertical ribs which project toward each other from its front and rear walls. The lateral members, on the other hand, have vertical slots in their side walls. The ribs of the vertical members snap into the slots of the lateral members and this interlocks the vertical and lateral members. The joints so formed are rendered more secure with screws which pass through the front and end walls of the vertical members and into the side walls of the lateral members. A siding material is attached to the lateral members and at its ends projects under a lip on the front walls of the vertical members.

    Abstract: A track has walls which enclose a hollow interior and among these walls are two laterally directed flanges which are separated by a slot that opens downwardly out of the track for the full length of the track. The track contains trolleys having wheels which roll along flanges of the track and the trolleys carry hangers which depend through the slot in the track and are attached to a door or some other suspended device. One of the trolleys also carries a latching mechanism which engages a keeper located within the track to secure the trolleys and suspended device in a predetermined position along the track. The latching mechanism includes a latch bar which pivots on the trolley between engage and release position and a spring which urges the bar to its engage position--the position in which it will engage the keeper upon encountering the keeper.

    Abstract: One leaf of a spring hinge has a center knuckle and the other leaf has aligned top and bottom end knuckles which are spaced apart. The center knuckle of the one leaf fits between the two end knuckles of the other leaf and is maintained in alignment with them by top and bottom hinge pins, the former extending from the top knuckle into the center knuckle and the latter from the bottom knuckle into the center knuckle. Whereas the bottom pin is attached to the center knuckle, the top pin is attached to the top knuckle, but its angular position is easily changed. Each pin has a threaded portion that is located within the center knuckle, and the end convolutions on a coil-type torsion spring are threaded over these threaded portions to secure the spring to the hinge pins. Each hinge pin also has a shank which extends from its threaded portion through the interior of the spring where the ends of the two shanks abut.

    Abstract: A security screw has an axially directed drive hole in its head, with the axis of that hole being coincident with the axis of the screw itself. To turn the screw in either direction, the shank of a driver is inserted into the drive hole and turned in the desired direction. The shank has at least one camming surface on it in the form of a land, and a gripping rod extends along that camming surface in the direction of the shank, the rod being generally centered with respect to the camming surface over which it lies. The arrangement is such that when the shank of the driver is turned with the gripping rod remaining generally with the screw head, the shank forces the gripping rod outwardly into snug contact with the side wall of the drive hole. Indeed, the gripping rod becomes lodged tightly between the wall of the drive hole and the shank of the driver so that the torque applied to the driver is transferred to the screw.

    Abstract: A lock located within a door has a bolt that is extended and retracted by a double acting air cylinder. A single air line extends from the door frame and into the door where it is connected with a valve having two discharge lines that lead to opposite ends of the cylinder. To energize the cylinder and move the lock bolt, a charge of pressurized air is directed to the valve which in turn directs it to one end of the cylinder. The charge of air further causes the valve to reset itself so that the next charge will be directed to the opposite end of the cylinder. Consequently, with successive charges of air the piston rod of the cylinder and the lock bolt move in opposite directions.

    Abstract: A lock has a lock cylinder provided with a rotatable core which is normally prevented from rotating by drivers that bridge the shear line between the core and the main body of the cylinder. However, when either first or second keys are inserted into the core, pins within the core are elevated to the shear line so that the drivers no longer prevent rotation of the core. The main body of the cylinder also contains a push rod which is urged into the core by an actuator when the actuator is energized, but is otherwise located out of the core with its inner end flush with the shear line. The core also contains a pin which aligns with the push rod. The first key is incapable of moving the push rod out of the core so that the core may be turned with the first key only when the actuator is de-energized. The second key, however, forces the pin associated with the push rod against the push rod and moves the push rod outwardly to the shear line, even when the actuator is energized.

    Abstract: A pocket door is moved between open and closed positions by an electric motor unit mounted on the studs framing the rough opening in which the door is installed. The rotary motion of the motor is translated into linear motion by a cable and pulley arrangement with one of the pulleys being a drive pulley on the shaft of the motor unit and the other being an idler pulley mounted on the track on which the door slides. The cable is attached to the door through a coil-type tension spring. Hence, the door will move when the motor is energized and should the door encounter an impediment upon closing the spring will expand and permit the pulley to slip within the loop of the cable. The motor is controlled by a timer which when activated causes the motor to run for sufficient time to open the door, then hold to enable one to pass through the door opening, and then run in the opposite direction for sufficient time to close the door.

    Abstract: Metal contained within soil is separated therefrom by introducing the soil into a tank containing water which is quite turbulent, the turbulence being generated by the fact that the water is introduced into the tank in a swirl and also directly upwardly through the center of the swirl. Vibrator units on the sidewalls of the tank further add to the turbulence. Upon being introduced into the turbulent water, the soil quickly turns to mud which goes into suspension and the suspension so formed is buoyed upwardly by the incoming clean water which rises through the tank. The suspension overflows the tank and is directed to a settling basin where the mud is allowed to settle out. The clean water which remains is recirculated through the tank. The metal, on the other hand, being considerably heavier than the mud, passes downwardly through the tank where it is thoroughly washed by the incoming water. The washed metal passes out of the bottom of the tank and is elevated upwardly by a screw-type conveyor.

The spindle supports a door and rotates with the door as the door pivots between open and closed positions. Within the case the spindle is coupled with a rotatable element which is acted upon by a return spring to bring the door to its closed position. The rotatable element carries a magnet which is located opposite to a magnetic reed switch on the case when the door is in a selected position and thereby closes a circuit to indicate the position of the door.

    Abstract: An exit fixture for a door is connected with the lock on the door and includes manually operated means which when depressed retracts the bolt of the lock, thereby releasing the door. Springs act upon the manually operated means to restore the manually operated means to its original position wherein the bolt will again project from the door. A bellows or other pneumatic device when filled with pressurized air overcomes the force exerted by the springs so as to allow the manually operated means to assume the position in which the latch bolt is retracted, thus permitting the door to be opened and closed without operating the lock.
