Patent number: 4828882Abstract: A process whereby particulate materials with a polymeric coating of controlled thickness are obtained by passing gas at a pre-determined temperature and flow rate substantially symmetrically through a bed of particles to create a coherent symmetrical spouting zone of fully-spouted, suspended particles is disclosed. The suspended particles are contacted with an atomized spray of polymer solution. The spray has a controlled flow rate and is confined to the spouting zone. As the process proceeds, the solvent evaporates from the fine droplets of the polymer solvent solution on contact or very quickly after contact of the polymer solvent solution with the particles. Structurally sensitive particulate material such as biomass is therefore only fleetingly contacted with solvent, on its outer shell only, and no substantial damage to the material can be effected by the solvent. Also, the coating solidifies quickly so that the little or no particle agglomeration or attrition occurs.Type: GrantFiled: March 16, 1987Date of Patent: May 9, 1989Assignee: Canadian Patents & Developments LimitedInventors: Marios Tsezos, Soo H. Patent number: 4820981Abstract: The invention is concerned with a method and apparatus for measuring magnetic losses in a ferromagnetic material specimen. According to the invention, an alternating magnetic field having a predetermined frequency and an amplitude which is modulated at a frequency lower than the predetermined frequency is applied to the specimen, and a temperature modulation at a surface of the specimen having the applied field is measured. The magnitude of magnetic losses in the specimen is determined from the measured surface temperature modulation. The method and apparatus of the invention do not necessitate winding coils around the ferromagnetic material specimen, and also enable one to obtain information about the distribution of magnetic losses in the specimen.Type: GrantFiled: December 28, 1987Date of Patent: April 11, 1989Assignee: Canadian Patents and Development Limited/Societe Canadienne des Brevets et d'Exploitation LimiteeInventors: Jean F. Patent number: 4819197Abstract: A circuit for detecting the positions and intensities of peaks in a digital input signal (which may be a digitized version of a signal from a CCD forming part of a three dimensional imaging device) employs a second derivative of the input signal for validating the presence of each input peak. Each validation signal enables an interpolation circuit that determines the position of a peak by finding the location of a zero crossing point of a first derivative of the input signal. Each validation signal also enables a maximum detector for measuring the intensity of each peak. The arrangement does not require resetting after each detection of a peak and is less sensitive than prior devices to noise or DC or low frequency components.Type: GrantFiled: October 1, 1987Date of Patent: April 4, 1989Assignee: Canadian Patents and Development Limited-Societe Canadienne Des Brevets Et D'Exploitation LimiteeInventor: Francois Blais

Patent number: 4808074Abstract: The invention relates to improvements in and relating to vertical axis wind turbines, particularly those of the "eggbeater" type. It has been found possible, in spite of previous beliefs that it was not so, to provide energy exchange means between the blades and the rotor to thereby smooth out cyclic variations in transmitted torque. The energy exchange means may be, for example, the provision of hinges between the blades and the rotor so that the blade is deflected in operation to transmit torque to the rotor in dependence not only on its fixed geometry but also in dependence on the deflection.Type: GrantFiled: April 10, 1987Date of Patent: February 28, 1989Assignee: Canadian Patents and Development Limited-Societe Canadienne Des Breyets et D'Exploitation LimiteeInventor: Peter South

Patent number: 4808849Abstract: An electret comprising an inherently charged material is provided. The material comprises phyllosilicate minerals and has external neutralizing ions removed therefrom or external ions added thereto. The electret is manufactured by either removing external ions from or adding external ions to a surface thereof. In a preferred embodiment, the electret is fabricated by placing the material between a pair of electrodes and immersing the material and electrodes in high-voltage insulating medium. A dc potential is then applied across the electrodes to create an electric field across the material. The duration of application of the dc potential is sufficient to provide a large surface charge on the material. The material is then separated from the electrodes while it is still immersed in the insulating medium. The separated material is then removed from the medium to obtain a substantially permanently charged electret.Type: GrantFiled: February 3, 1988Date of Patent: February 28, 1989Assignee: Canadian Patents and Development Limited/Societe Canadienne des Brevets et D'Exploitation LimiteeInventors: Ion I. Patent number: 4800541Abstract: A method of determining the bearing "S" of a signal transmitter relative to a remote signal receiver. A signal pulse having a high signal to noise ratio is transmitted and sampled at closely spaced receivers displaced from the transmitter by a distance "D". Sampled phase components are derived at each receiver by deriving in-phase and quadrature components of the sampled pulse and by deriving the arctangent of each such component. The arrival time of the sampled pulses is measured by applying a least squares Gaussian fit to the modulus or to the amplitude envelope of the pulse samples. The difference ".delta.t" between the time of arrival of the pulse at each receiver is determined and then the approximate phase difference 2.pi..omega..delta.t between the sampled pulses is determined where ".omega." is the carrier frequency of the transmitted pulse. The phase difference is then applied to resolve the phase ambiguity of the phase components and the bearing "S" is then calculated.Type: GrantFiled: February 12, 1987Date of Patent: January 24, 1989Assignee: Canadian Patents and Development LimitedInventors: David M. Farmer, Jane A. Verrall

Patent number: 4795969Abstract: A current-comparator technique for obtaining a load loss standard with adjustable loss tangent (or power factor) for in-situ calibration of transformer loss measuring system is described. The load loss standard, driven by the test voltage through a low-loss high-voltage compressed-gas-dielectric reference capacitor, simulates an inductive load which can be operated with load currents of up to 1000 A. For a 500 kV reference capacitor and a load current of 1000 A, the load loss standard simulates an equivalent inductive load with a rating of 500 MVA. Adjustment of the loss tangent (or power factor) is achieved by comparing the load current, using the current comparator, with in-phase and quadrature reference currents derived from the test voltage.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 1987Date of Patent: January 3, 1989Assignee: Canadian Patents and Development LimitedInventor: Eddy So

Patent number: 4788080Abstract: There is disclosed a process for coating particles, such as ceramic, metallic and organic cores, with fine powder, such as ceramic, metal, organic or carbon powder. The process comprises providing a mixture comprising the particles and a binder which is capable of slowly melting to viscous state. Then the mixture is tumbled while slowly heating it to enable the binder to reach the viscous state while allowing the particles to be substantially covered with the binder. The next step includes cooling the mixture to about room temperature and thereafter breaking up the particles that may have agglomerated during the tumbling and heating to give individual particles covered with the binder. As a final step, the fine powder is added to the individual binder covered particles and the mixture is tumbled and heated again to the viscous state under conditions effective to provide a coating of the fine powder on the particles.Type: GrantFiled: April 27, 1987Date of Patent: November 29, 1988Assignee: Canadian Patents and Development LimitedInventors: Junichi Hojo, Serge Dallaire, Blaise Champagne
