  • Patent number: 4414156
Abstract: The invention relates to a novel process for producing 2-methoxybenzanthrones, starting with 1-aminoanthraquinones, which process is characterized in that, by application of a special reaction medium, namely a dimethylalkanephosphonate, which at the same time acts as a methylation agent in one of the reaction steps, the reaction is performed from beginning to end according to the principle of the single-vessel reaction, that is to say, without isolation of intermediates. The 2-methoxybenzanthrones obtained by this process are important intermediate products for vat dyes.

  • Patent number: 4406753
Abstract: An electrolytic metal recovery cell is described in which a cylindrical cathode is mounted for rotation in a housing having an inlet and outlet for solution from which metal is to be recovered. The housing contains an anode and a cutter blade is mounted so as to be capable of removing metal deposited over the whole face of the cathode when the cell is in use. In order to control the operation of the cell, electrical means are provided for operating the cutter blade at predetermined intervals of time irrespective of the electrolysis conditions and for operating the cutter blade when a monitored cathode potential deviates a predetermined amount from a desired value.By this means the use of previously proposed scrapers and their attendant disadvantages are avoided and the cell can be easily controlled either under steady state electrolytic conditions or even when there are large variations in the concentration of the metal ions in solution.

  • Patent number: 4396278
Abstract: In the light path of a photographic enlarger, a supplementary light source is arranged in such a way that an image thereof is formed by the condenser in the focal plane of the imaging lens but outside the range covered by the latter. If the original to be printed has scratches, these deflect at least a part of the light, which reaches them from the supplementary light source into the lens. As a result, that proportion of the actual printing light supplied by the printing light source which is deflected past the lens by the scratches is at least partially compensated. The image of the scratches on the printing material is virtually invisible.

  • Patent number: 4394227
Abstract: An electrochemical process for the preparation of benzanthrones and planar, polycyclic aromatic oxygen-containing compounds is described. The process is carried out in an acid medium in an electrolytic cell which is separated by a diaphragm into a cathode compartment and an anode compartment. In the cathode compartment, anthraquinone or an anthraquinone derivative is reduced electrolytically to oxanthrone and the latter is reacted with glycerol to give the corresponding benzanthrone. In the anode compartment, a transition metal ion is simultaneously converted electrolytically from a lower oxidation stage into the next higher oxidation stage. The metal ion of higher valency is then used in the anolyte as an oxidizing agent by means of which the corresponding oxygen-containing compounds are obtained, starting from planar, polycyclic aromatic compounds.

  • Patent number: 4394717
Abstract: The system comprises two light sources which are diametrically opposed relative to the optical axis of the system. In the axis there is provided a light-mixing mirror which has a generally sulcated face having grooves therein of triangular cross-section and raised portions of triangular cross-section separating the grooves. Light coming from the two light sources slightly diverges when it impinges the sulcated face of the mirror and is deflected into the direction of the optical axis thereby being intensively mixed.
