A local throttling manager may interoperate with co-resident data agents and/or a media agent executing on any given local computing device, whether a client computing device or a secondary storage computing device. The local throttling manager may allocate and manage the available bandwidth for various jobs and their constituent data streams—across the data agents and/or media agent. Bandwidth is allocated and re-allocated to data streams used by ongoing jobs, in response to new jobs starting and old jobs completing, without having to pause and restart ongoing jobs to accommodate bandwidth adjustments. The illustrative embodiment also provides local users with a measure of control over data streams—to suspend, pause, and/or resume them—independently from the centralized storage manager that manages the overall storage system.

The data storage system may also include a secondary storage computing device, a single instance database, and one or more storage devices that store copies of the primary data (e.g., secondary copies, tertiary copies, etc.). The secondary storage computing device receives blocks of data from the computing devices and accesses the single instance database to determine whether the blocks of data are unique (meaning that no instances of the blocks of data are stored on the storage devices). If a block of data is unique, the single instance database stores it on a storage device. If not, the secondary storage computing device can avoid storing the block of data on the storage devices.

    Abstract: Disclosed deduplication techniques at a distributed data storage system guarantee that space reclamation will not affect deduplicated data integrity even without perfect synchronization between components. By understanding certain “behavioral” characteristics and schedule cadences of backup operations that generate backup copies received at the distributed data storage system, data blocks that are not re-written by subsequent backup copies are pro-actively aged, while promoting continued retention of data blocks that are re-written. An expiry scheme operates with block-level granularity. Each unique deduplicated data block is given an expiry timeframe based on the block's arrival time at the distributed data storage system (i.e., when a backup copy supplies the block) and further based on backup frequencies of the various virtual disks referencing a unique system-wide identifier of the block, which is based on the block's hash value. Communications between components are kept to an as-needed basis.

A method is provided with input signals in response to the move, and outputs a probability value that the move is temporary or permanent. Servers in the pool of servers may, in parallel, query the backup and CI database for a list of files assigned to the respective server that have not been content indexed. The servers may then request a media agent to restore the assigned files from secondary storage and provide the restored files to the servers. The servers may then content index the received restored files. Once the content indexing is complete, the servers can send the content index information to the backup and CI database for storage.

Interoperability techniques include media agents generating separate data streams to the deduplication appliance. Each data stream carries a different kind of data, e.g., payload data, metadata content, or high-level index information. On initial backup, the media agent instructs the deduplication appliance to deduplicate the payload data stream but not the other data streams, thus intelligently applying resources to data most likely to benefit from deduplication.
