The inner ring clamps onto the rotating tubular and the outer ring is tethered to the top drive unit. In the event of a disconnect, the tethered assembly holds the load.

Abstract: A system for accurately determining the torque applied to threadable pipe members, such as casing, to be threaded together, comprising a torque wrench having a first end secured to one of the pipe members, and a second end forming an extendable handle portion, a cable secured to the handle portion for pulling in the direction to impart rotational force on the pipe members to complete the connection, and a plurality of wire strain gages embedded in the wall of a pin member inserted adjacent the distal end of the wrench for recording the torque applied to the pipe member by the torque wrench and the cable member.

Abstract: A casing pipe thread protector which includes a body member molded of flexible material, such as urethane, with memory/resiliency characteristics, having a central opening through which a pin end of a length of casing will fit, the body member in a molded slightly open position, to accommodate the casing, a strap set within a channel formed around the annular wall of the body member, the strap having a locking member at its first opposing end, and an adjustment screw, so that the strap can be adjusted to various locking tightness. Upon sliding the pin end of the casing in the central opening, the locking member is moved to the closed position, tightening the body member around the pin, so that the threads are completely encircled around the pin end.
