Abstract: A keratoprosthesis having a central optical part tightly connected to a peripheral haptic part both made of hydrophobic polymers. Smooth surfaces of the optical part are present where the surface oriented toward the eyelid has been rendered hydrophilic, whereas, the chemical nature of the surface oriented to the anterior chamber of the eye is such that it does not support fibrin adherence and membrane formation. The chemical nature of the textured haptic part is configured to promote the adherence of cells and eventually the vascular ingrowth.
