Abstract: Systems and methods are described for determining a subset of conforming descriptions of a set of descriptions of bicycle configurations, which are combinations of candidate components, such as frames, forks, stems, handlebars, seat posts, and saddles. For determining whether a candidate description conforms, (1) a set of candidate components with a physical specification of each candidate component is accessed, (2) at least one biomechanical constraint is input, and (3) optionally a non-biomechanical constraint is input, such as weight, material, or price. An embodiment may generate a biomechanical constraint from a physical measurement taken from a particular bicycle and/or from a physical measurement taken from a particular cyclist.

  • Publication number: 20100076721
Abstract: Described are an automated system, an apparatus, and a method adapted to tracking and dynamically measuring locations in a volume for determining a size and a position of a body during a performance of a repetitive motion, such as in using sporting equipment. The sporting equipment may be a bicycle, and the body may be a cyclist. The apparatus comprises a plurality of markers attached to the body, a three-dimensional marker tracking system, and a processing unit. The apparatus, system, or method computes a dimensional statistic from computed measurements of all strokes of at least two strokes included in a period of time of the repetitive motion.

  • Publication number: 20070142177
Abstract: This invention is an apparatus for quantitatively measuring the fit of an individual to one or more bicycles or other such human-powered conveyances. The apparatus comprises at least a three-dimensional marker tracking system, a software-based data analysis and presentation computer system, and (if necessary) a means of supporting a bicycle in a stationary location such that the individual being fit can pedal their bicycle in a normal yet stationary manner. In advanced embodiments, the system includes a means of simulating a bicycle, and perhaps even a means of altering the position of the bicycle components to perform a bicycle fit in a fully automated way.
