Patent number: 9482536Abstract: A solution for estimating the pose of a platform, such as a vehicle, is provided. Data from a plurality of types of sensing devices located on the platform can be used to independently calculate a plurality of preliminary estimates corresponding to the pose. A plurality of estimates corresponding to the pose can be generated using the preliminary estimates and at least one covariance matrix. One or more entries in the covariance matrix are adjusted based on an uncertainty for the corresponding preliminary estimate. The uncertainty can vary based on time, distance, and/or velocity of the platform.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 2013Date of Patent: November 1, 2016Assignees: International Electronic Machines Corp., CSX Transportation, Inc.Inventors: Zahid F. Patent number: 6945207Abstract: A system and method for providing auxiliary power to a large diesel engine allowing shutdown of such large engine in all weather conditions. An auxiliary power unit made up of a secondary engine coupled to an electrical generator is provided. An automatic control system shuts down the primary engine after a period of idling and the auxiliary power unit provides electrical power for heating and air conditioning. In cold weather, the auxiliary power unit maintains the primary engine coolant and lube-oil warm to facilitate engine restart. The coolant system is kept warm using a heat exchanger and electrical heaters. The lube-oil system is kept warm using a recirculating pump and electrical heaters. In warm weather, the auxiliary power unit provides electrical power for air conditioning and other hotel loads. The auxiliary power unit isolates the primary engine batteries during operation and provides electrical power for hotel and non-vital loads.Type: GrantFiled: July 22, 2002Date of Patent: September 20, 2005Assignee: CSX Transportation, Inc.Inventors: Lawrence J Biess, Christer Gotmalm

Patent number: 6722186Abstract: An embodiment of the present invention includes an apparatus for preparing a fuel tank for repairs and verifying repair work upon completion. The apparatus includes a supply system constructed and arranged to be coupled to the fuel tank for providing a supply of inert gas into the fuel tank, for purging the fuel tank of oxygen to a certain level and for making inert the fuel tank with the gas. The supply system includes a gas release system constructed and arranged to provide the supply of inert gas. The supply system further includes an arrangement for connecting and facilitating transport of the inert gas. A supply mechanism is configured and positioned to facilitate and regulate a transfer of gas from the gas release system to the fuel tank. A connector mechanism is for coupling the supply mechanism to the gas release system. A relief system is constructed and arranged to be coupled to the fuel tank to regulate and relieve pressure in the fuel tank.Type: GrantFiled: April 19, 2002Date of Patent: April 20, 2004Assignee: CSX Transportation, Inc.Inventor: Lawrence J. Patent number: 6378188Abstract: A method for preparing a fuel tank for repairs and verifying the repair work using an apparatus is presented. The apparatus is connected to the fuel tank. The fuel tank is purged of oxygen to a certain level using a gas provided by the apparatus until a level of the oxygen in the fuel tank reaches that level. Openings on the fuel tank are closed to the environment. The fuel tank is repaired while the level of oxygen is maintained in the fuel tank. The gas provided by the apparatus pressurizes the fuel tank to a certain pressure level. The pressure level is maintained for a specified period of time. An inspection of the repaired area of the fuel tank is then performed.Type: GrantFiled: August 18, 2000Date of Patent: April 30, 2002Assignee: CSX Transportation, Inc.Inventor: Lawrence J. Biess

Patent number: 4871047Abstract: This invention relates to grab irons and more particularly to two-piece, adjustable grab irons. The grab iron consists of a handhold-shape containing a mounting flange portion and a rod member as well as a grabfoot-shape containing a mounting flange portion and a base portion having a ring with a hole sized to receive the rod member of the handhold-shape. The rod member possesses a series of holes that are spaced along at least a portion of the rod member, and are formed at the same angle as measured from a horizontal vector. The base portion has a single pin hole having a size and angle that permits alignment with any of the pin holes in the rod member. The two pieces are secured together by the use of a metal fastener such as a steel expansion pin or a screw that is placed through both the pin hole in the base member and the appropriate hole in the rod member. The excess portion of the rod member extending past the grabfoot-shape is cut off.Type: GrantFiled: September 1, 1988Date of Patent: October 3, 1989Assignee: CSX Transportation, IncorporatedInventor: Leonard A.
