  • Publication number: 20050095665
Abstract: In response to the need for highly-sensitive antibiotic susceptibility assays and identification assays that do not require extensive incubation times, the present invention provides automated assay methods and systems that permit the determination of antibiotic susceptibilities and/or microorganism identification in a timeframe that is substantially shorter than has previously been attainable using a hybrid system that combines turbimetric and fluorescence determinations using a single, clear-plastic assay platform. Related devices, kits, and components thereof are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6808304
Abstract: A method for generating a vortex-like mixing action within a liquid held in a container by causing the container to move back and forth in a constant sinusoidal pattern at high speeds. Momentum forces acting upon the liquid solution cause it to generate an internal mixing motion of the liquid solution without the aid of extraneous mixing members.

  • Patent number: 6723288
Abstract: A multi-analyzer system where at least two automatic clinical analyzers are linked together by a bi-directional sample rack shuttle, both analyzers initially capable of performing a slightly different menu of assays. The bi-directional incoming and outgoing sample rack transport system of a first one of the two analyzers is automatically converted into a one-way incoming sample rack transport system adapted and the incoming sample tube transport system of a second of the two analyzers is automatically converted into a one-way outgoing transport system adapted to dispose of all sample racks having sample tubes with samples finally tested by either analyzer. In the event that one of the two analyzers experiences an operating failure, the analyzer system may automatically revert to a single analyzer system employing only the operational analyzer.

  • Patent number: 6706861
Abstract: The present application relates to a method of making liposomes having membrane proteins incorporated therein, the method comprising: providing the membrane protein in solution; providing a solution of preformed liposomes; and incubating the mixture. Prior to the step of providing a solution of preformed liposomes, the liposomes are formed by combining a mixture of phospholipids with a solution of at least one type of unsaturated fatty acid. The methods of the present invention further relate to the method of making a reagent comprising tissue factor reconstituted into preformed liposomes. The method of the present invention for making a tissue factor reagent comprises: providing tissue factor in solution; providing a solution of preformed liposomes comprising a mixture of phospholipids and at least one type of unsaturated fatty acid; and incubating the mixture.

  • Patent number: 6573054
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for detecting the amount of a target polynucleotide in a sample. A combination is provided in a medium. The combination comprises (i) a sample suspected of containing the target polynucleotide, the target polynucleotide being in single stranded form, (ii) a reference polynucleotide comprising a sequence that is common with a sequence of the target polynucleotide, and (iii) a predetermined amount of an oligonucleotide probe that has a sequence that hybridizes with the sequence that is common. The combination is subjected to conditions for amplifying the target polynucleotide and the reference polynucleotide. The conditions permit formation of substantially non-dissociative complexes of the target polynucleotide and the reference polynucleotide, respectively, with the oligonucleotide probe. Furthermore, the predetermined amount of the oligonucleotide probe is less than the expected amount of the amplified target polynucleotide.

  • Patent number: 6571934
Abstract: A magnetic sample rack adapted to support liquid containers is urged along a surface by means of a magnetic conveyor system located beneath the surface. The magnetic conveyor system comprises a plurality of magnetic housings driven by a belt, the magnetic housings including a magnet slideably contained in a closed upper cavity. Magnetic forces emanating from the magnet overcome frictional resistive forces between the sample racks and the operating surface and move the sample racks along input and output lanes defined in the operating surface. Abrupt movements of the sample racks are eliminated because the housing magnet slides smoothly towards the sample rack, secures the sample rack, and pulls the rack along the operating surface as the housings are moved at a steady rate by the belt.
