  • Patent number: 7226384
Abstract: The present invention relates to a torsional damper for an electrically-variable transmission. The torsional damper is equipped with a lock-out clutch to directly couple the engine to the input shaft of the transmission. The electric motors provided with the electrically-variable transmission can serve to effectively cancel out engine compression pulses when the springs of the torsional damper are locked out. The present invention also includes damper springs of variable rates to effectively attenuate distinctive or inconsistent torque fluctuations when the engine is operating in displacement-on-demand mode.

  • Patent number: 7216636
Abstract: An evaporative emission control and leak detection system for a vehicle is provided. The system includes an integrated valve module in fluid communication with a carbon canister and atmosphere. The module is arranged to vent the system when exposed to predetermined high negative and positive pressure conditions. The module includes a switch mechanism having a spring biasing member arranged to bias the switch mechanism to an open position. The switch is operable to indicate when the system is in a low negative pressure condition. The switch also includes a negative pressure valve coupled to a fluid passage between the canister, the atmosphere and the switch, and a positive pressure valve coupled to a fluid passage between the canister and atmosphere that bypasses the negative pressure valve and switch. The negative and positive pressure valves are positioned in a stacked arrangement in the integrated valve module.

  • Patent number: 7219009
Abstract: A method of diagnosing an operating condition of a short runner valve in an intake manifold of an internal combustion engine using an exhaust sensor in an exhaust manifold of the internal combustion engine. The short runner valve is commanded to an open position for a test period, it is resolved whether the test period has elapsed, and it is determined whether a sensed exhaust gas parameter has exceeded a threshold during the test period. A pass signal is issued if the sensed exhaust gas parameter has exceeded the threshold within the test period. Otherwise, a fail signal is issued if the sensed exhaust gas parameter has not exceeded the threshold within the test period.

  • Patent number: 7216096
Abstract: A vehicle part inventory management system is provided for filling at least part of the vehicle part orders by one vehicle dealer from the inventory of another vehicle dealer. The inventory management system includes an ordered parts data structure for storing ordered parts information; an inventory data structure for storing vehicle part inventory information for a plurality of vehicle dealers; and a dealer assessment module connected to the ordered parts data structure and the inventory data structure, such that the dealer assessment module receives at least one request to fill a vehicle part order and is able to determine a list of potential supplying dealers that have the ordered vehicle part. The inventory management system further includes a dealer interface module that receives the list of potential supplying dealers and is able communicate a request to supply the ordered vehicle part to at least one of the potential supplying dealers.

  • Patent number: 7216011
Abstract: A tooling and part design method automatically detects tooling and machining interferences with a desired part design. A user selects a mechanical component. Data indicative of the mechanical component, such as a part template, is determined and displayed to the user. The user selects one or more design parameters of the mechanical component to modify. Any necessary tooling and/or machining functions are embedded in the data, and performed automatically on the mechanical component when the user modifies a design parameter. Any interferences caused by the modification are automatically identified to the user.

  • Patent number: 7207410
Abstract: An impact sensing apparatus for a motor vehicle includes a control module having an accelerometer and a contact switch mounted in a bumper of the motor vehicle. The contact switch is in an open position and is in communication with the control module. The control module deploys an airbag when the accelerometer detects a change in velocity of the motor vehicle exceeding a threshold lowered when the contact switch is urged by the bumper to a closed position.

  • Patent number: 7208849
Abstract: A detachable transmission shift lever theft deterrent arrangement is provided that includes a transmission shift stub accessible from a vehicle interior. A detachable shift lever is provided and arranged to slideably engage the transmission shift stub. A locking mechanism is positioned on the shift lever and arranged to engage the shift stub. A security system including a transponder is positioned on the shift lever, and the transponder is arranged to receive power from an antenna positioned on the shift stub and send a unique signal back to the antenna upon positioning the shift lever within a predetermined range of the antenna. A vehicle ignition system is then enabled when the antenna receives the unique signal from the transponder.

  • Patent number: 7204237
Abstract: A loose or missing fuel cap detection method for an evaporative emission control system of an automotive vehicle detects a loose or missing fuel cap based in part on whether fuel level changed. The method determines whether the fuel level changed, which is indicative of a refueling event. The method then determines if one or more leaks are present. If the fuel level changed and one or more leaks are present, the method determines that the fuel cap is loose or missing.

  • Patent number: 7204235
Abstract: An engine torque management system of a V-style engine utilizes a cylinder head metal temperature sensor in each cylinder head to detect a temperature. When the sensor temperature rises above a threshold value for a particular time period, the response software shuts down the fuel injection of a bank of cylinders in which the sensor is installed. Cool, uncombusted intake air cools that bank and an external fan blows air over that bank. If the sensor in the second bank of cylinders rises above the threshold, the fuel injection on that bank shuts off to undergo cooling while the fuel injection on the first bank restarts. Alternation between the two banks occurs to maintain the desired level of torque demanded by the vehicle driver.

  • Patent number: 7198761
Abstract: A hydrogen fuel system for a vehicle includes a fuel tank having a fuel inlet for receiving a borohydride fuel into a fuel holding portion of an internal cavity, and a waste inlet arranged to receive the waste liquid generated by an on-board hydrogen reaction process. The waste liquid is received into a waste liquid portion of the internal cavity. An expandable divider element is positioned within the tank to keep the fuel holding portion of the internal cavity separate from the waste liquid holding portion. The waste liquid holding portion can be positioned within the internal cavity so as to allow heat from the waste liquid to preheat the fuel stored in the fuel holding portion.
