Patent number: 11545892Abstract: A power-factor corrected AC/DC converter has three half-bridge legs, electrically coupled with each other in parallel, each leg having a pair of switches. Each switch of the pair is electrically coupled to the other in series via a respective node that is electrically coupled through an inductor to an AC line. The converter has a fourth half-bridge leg electrically coupled with the other legs to form an electrically parallel circuit. The fourth leg has a pair of switches electrically coupled to each other in series via a fourth node, which is selectively electrically coupleable to a neutral or a second AC line. The converter has a controller that operates the three legs as a 3-channel interleaved AC/DC boost converter and couples the fourth node to the neutral or second AC line if the input is single-phase, and as a 3-phase AC/DC boost converter if the input is three-phase.Type: GrantFiled: March 17, 2021Date of Patent: January 3, 2023Assignees: Delta-Q Technologies Corp., The University of British ColumbiaInventors: Hamidreza Hafezinasab, Christopher Jon Botting, Wilson Allan Thomas Eberle

Patent number: 10879813Abstract: A single-stage AC/DC converter includes a boost PFC AC/DC converter and a half-bridge split-capacitor DC/DC converter. The boost PFC AC/DC converter includes a boost inductor, and the half-bridge split-capacitor DC/DC converter includes an inductor in series with a primary winding of a transformer. A method of operation of a single-stage AC/DC converter that includes a boost PFC AC/DC converter and a half-bridge split-capacitor DC/DC converter includes modulating a switching frequency of at least one switch. The method may further include maintaining a constant duty cycle, for example a duty cycle of 0.5. An implementation of the boost inductor in a boost PFC AC/DC converter of a single-stage AC/DC converter includes a variable boost inductor, such as two inductors of approximately equal inductance, and a boost inductor switching circuit, such as two single-pole, double-throw relays.Type: GrantFiled: September 19, 2019Date of Patent: December 29, 2020Assignee: Delta-Q Technologies Corp.Inventors: Iman Askarianabyaneh, Nicholas Adam Dohmeier, Majid Pahlevaninezhad, Christopher Jon Botting

Patent number: 10720787Abstract: An apparatus and method employs a rectifier, switches, and power converter that comprises a first stage, a second stage and a direct current (DC) bus between the first and second stages, to: in a first state supply rectified DC current to the first stage and a voltage adjusted current from the second stage to a load, for example a power storage device (e.g., secondary battery, ultra-capacitor(s)) at a relatively high voltage (e.g., 48 V for traction motor), and in a second state supply DC current to the first stage from the power storage device and supply a voltage adjusted current from the second stage, for example to a lower voltage DC bus or load (e.g., 12 V). The rectifier can, for example, receive grid or mains AC power.Type: GrantFiled: July 24, 2018Date of Patent: July 21, 2020Assignee: DELTA-Q TECHNOLOGIES CORP.Inventors: Nicholas Adam Dohmeier, Haakon MacCallum, Christopher Jon Botting

Patent number: 9490694Abstract: A power converter (e.g., AC-DC converter) includes an input inductor coupled between a first AC voltage source input node and a central node, a first switch coupled between the central node and a first rail node, a second switch coupled between the central node and a second rail node, and a resonant output circuit. The first switch has a body diode that passes current from the first rail node to the central node. The second switch has a body diode that passes current from the central node to the second rail node. A first input device controls current flow between the first rail node and the second AC voltage source input node, and a second input device controls current flow between the second rail node and the second AC voltage source input. The output circuit includes at least one capacitor and at least one inductor which form a resonant network, hence are denominated as resonant capacitor(s) and resonant inductor(s).Type: GrantFiled: March 4, 2015Date of Patent: November 8, 2016Assignee: DELTA-Q TECHNOLOGIES CORP.Inventor: Md Muntasir Ul Alam

Patent number: 8937469Abstract: Methods and apparatus for zero current detection and discontinuous conduction mode digital detection for a boost power factor correction converter based on a digital signal processor are disclosed. By effectively using resources in a processor with integrated high-speed comparators, simple detection can be accomplished with cost and performance over alternative detection methods. The methods and apparatus can be employed in an adaptive digital controller for mixed-conduction mode in the converter and can provide for lower total harmonic distortion and greater power factors than a non-adaptive controller.Type: GrantFiled: February 8, 2013Date of Patent: January 20, 2015Assignee: Delta-Q Technologies Corp.Inventors: Colin William Clark, Fariborz Musavi, Russell Leslie Lewis, Ewan Murray Edington
