  • Patent number: 6866685
Abstract: A prosthetic component is configured to have intentional interruptions in an articulating face thereof. The intentional interruptions are configured to yield an optimum contact area or bearing surface, particularly with regard to low wear and greater lubricity through the application of lubrication and contact mechanics theory for the particular prosthetic component. Such optimization is applied to a wide range of prosthetic component sizes of the particular prosthetic component. The optimum range of percentage area of relief or interruptions, defined as a percentage of a baseline uninterrupted bearing surface area to be removed by the features of the interrupted bearing surface configuration is from 0.3% to 73.7% for hard-on-hard bearing components and from 5.7% to 83.2% for polyethylene-on-hard bearing components. The range for both hard-on-hard and polyethylene-on-hard implants translates to a relieved area ranging from 0.3% to 31.

  • Patent number: 6860888
Abstract: A cutting device for use in a medical procedure includes a housing having a housing cavity and defining a first cutting surface. An actuator is positioned within the housing cavity and has a first cam member. A cutting member is positioned with the housing cavity and has a second cam member. The cutting member defines a second cutting surface. Movement of the actuator within the housing cavity causes the first cam member to cooperate with the second cam member so as to rotate the cutting member relative to the housing. Rotation of the cutting member relative to the housing causes the second cutting surface to move relative to the first cutting surface to effectuate a cutting operation.

  • Patent number: 6808527
Abstract: An intramedullary nail has a dynamization opening that accommodates and utilizes a dynamization window insert. The dynamization window insert is press-fit into the dynamization opening. The dynamization window insert is oval shaped and includes first and second protrusions that extend from respective surfaces of the dynamization window insert. The dynamization opening is sized to receive the dynamization window insert but compress the protrusions/window insert during insertion. The dynamization opening includes channels or grooves that are sized to accommodate the protrusions and allow the protrusions/window insert to return to an uncompressed state when situated therein. The dynamization opening and window insert cooperate to allow a press fit of the window insert into the dynamization opening with an elastic snap-fit and audible sound.

  • Patent number: 6793676
Abstract: A method of reconstructing a joint having two bones separated by cartilaginous material is provided. The method comprises the steps of removing a portion of the cartilaginous material to create a defect site, positioning an anatomically shaped reconstructive structure comprising multiple layers of submucosa and having a thickness of about 1 to about 12 millimeters adjacent to the defect site, and securing the reconstructive structure to the defect site. The method can further comprise the steps of positioning a barrier layer between the bleeding bone and the reconstructive structure, securing the barrier layer to the bleeding bone, and securing the reconstructive structure to the barrier layer.

  • Patent number: 6786908
Abstract: An intramedullary nail structure is formed with opposing dynamization windows, and spacers of a bioresorbable material are positioned within the dynamization windows. The dynamization windows are longer than they are wide. The spacers may be integrally formed as a single insert. The nail is used with a bone fastener such as a bone screw which is advanced transversely through the bone and into the spacer, preferably in a bicortical attachment with the bone. The bone fastener is smaller across than the dynamization windows, so each spacer spaces the bone fastener relative to its dynamization window. As the spacers resorb, stress (at least in one direction) is increasingly transmitted through the fracture site rather than through the intramedullary nail. The positioning of the bone fastener, the shape and size of the dynamization windows and spacers, and the material of the spacers all allow design control over the type and amount of dynamization seen at the fracture site.

  • Patent number: 6758850
Abstract: A flexion gap instrument is configured to mate with a ligament tensioning tool, such as known distraction devices and pivoting knee balancers. The instrument facilitates making A/P resections in the femur for placement of a femoral prosthesis component to maintain an optimum symmetric flexion gap, which will avoid the risk of medial or lateral laxity in flexion, instability of articulating component dislocation. The instrument includes a base that is configured to sit within the ligament tensioning device, and a vertically extending upstanding portion that is configured to mate with a cutting block or other knee arthroplasty instrument that must be positioned relative to the distal end of the femur. The upstanding portion includes a measurement plate that bears a scale indicating a flexion gap distance.

  • Patent number: 6736851
Abstract: A shoulder prosthesis and/or prosthesis sizing system, especially for treatment of degenerative arthritis or trauma, has an articulating head component. The shoulder prosthesis includes a humeral stem and a series of humeral heads. The heads are attached to the humeral stem by means of a locking connector. The locking connector allows the humeral head to be oriented in multiple positions of version, varus/valgus angulation, eccentricity and head height, while providing rigid securing of the humeral head to the humeral stem in the selected position relative to the humeral stem. In one form, the locking connector includes an expansion collar that provides radially outward expansion for humeral head position locking. The present shoulder prosthesis provides a means to anatomically position the humeral head relative to the humeral stem and rigidly secure the humeral head in the selected position relative to the humeral stem. This is accomplished by a minimum of components.

  • Patent number: 6726723
Abstract: A knee prosthesis and method for use are provided, in which the knee prosthesis provides anterior and posterior stability and controlled femoral roll-back, while also providing rotational kinematics. The femoral component has a pair of convexly shaped condyles which are spaced apart to form an intercondylar notch. Anterior and posterior cams are provided within the notch. The tibial component comprises a platform upon which a tibial bearing is mounted to provide for rotational movement about the tibial axis. The tibial bearing is provided with surfaces to engage the condyles and has an upwardly extending spine which is positioned to engage the anterior and posterior femoral cams. At full extension, the spine engages the anterior femoral cam to provide a 3° hyperextension stop. Between full extension and approximately 50° of flexion, the spine is free to translate between the anterior and posterior femoral cams.

  • Patent number: 6702824
Abstract: An apparatus for positioning a prosthesis in a bone includes a body, first and second clamps, a depth gauge and a guide. The first clamp is coupled to the body. The depth gage is coupled to the body and is movable relative thereto generally perpendicular to the shaft of the bone. The second clamp can be selectively engaged with and disengaged from the depth gage. The second clamp is movable with the depth gage and is also moveable in a direction generally parallel to the axis of the bone. The guide is used to determine the proper rotational orientation of the apparatus. The first clamp is then secured to the bone. The second clamp is secured to a trial prosthesis and is engaged with the depth gage as the trial is inserted into the bone. When the proper insertion depth is reached, the second clamp is secured to the depth gage. The joint is then reduced and the range of motion checked. The depth and rotational orientation may be adjusted as needed.

  • Patent number: 6699289
Abstract: A glenoid component for securement to a glenoid surface of a scapula so as to provide a bearing surface for a head portion of a humerus includes a body having a first surface configured to contact the glenoid surface of the scapula and a second surface configured to receive the head portion of the humerus. The glenoid component also includes an interruption such as a buttress extending from the body. The interruption is configured to be received in a like-configured notch formed in the glenoid surface of the scapula. The interruption helps prevent movement of the glenoid component relative to the glenoid surface of the scapula after implant. The body also may include anchoring extending from the body for penetrating the glenoid surface of the scapula so as to help secure the body to the glenoid surface of the scapula. The glenoid component is used in one application to help correct bone defects and in another application for wear.
