Patent number: 6799275Abstract: A method and apparatus for securing a secure processor is described. A plurality of spurious points are added to a biometric template. A received biometric data is matched to the biometric template. It is determined if the plurality of spurious points are present in the received biometric data. If the received biometric data matches the biometric template and the spurious points were not present in the received biometric data, access is granted to the secure processor.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 2000Date of Patent: September 28, 2004Assignee: Digital Persona, Inc.Inventor: Vance C. Patent number: 6324310Abstract: A method and apparatus for scanning a fingerprint using a linear optical sensor. A finger or palm is rolled over a transparent roller. A light source directs light through the roller to illuminate or detect the finger. Light directed through the roller is focused onto a linear imaging device. A full 2D recreation of the fingerprint is assembled from the discrete line-image data collected by the linear array imaging sensor. The apparatus contains a rotation detector to detect rotational movement of the roller. A finger guide positioned adjacent to the roller prevents distortion of the finger due to excess pressure.Type: GrantFiled: June 2, 1998Date of Patent: November 27, 2001Assignee: Digital Persona, Inc.Inventor: Kenneth Brownlee

Patent number: 6292576Abstract: A method and apparatus for distinguishing a human finger from a reproduction of a fingerprint. A finger is placed on a transparent platen having a prism or microprism array attached. A first light source directs light to the platen, the first light positioned to show illumination in the areas where the skin is in contact with the platen. A first image of the fingerprint is captured by an imaging device when the finger is illuminated by the first light source. A second light source directs light at the platen, the second light positioned to show illumination in the areas where there is no skin contact. A second image of the fingerprint is captured by the imaging device when the finger is illuminated by the second light source. A determination that the fingerprint is from a human finger is made if a mathematical comparison of the two images meets some predetermined criteria.Type: GrantFiled: February 29, 2000Date of Patent: September 18, 2001Assignee: Digital Persona, Inc.Inventor: Kenneth Brownlee

Patent number: 6188781Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for illuminating a fingerprint. A finger is placed on a transparent platen which has a microprism array on one surface. A light source directs light through a horizontal plane of the platen to illuminate the finger. Light directed through the platen is substantially parallel to an axis of the microprism array and is largely contained within the body of the platen. The skin in contact with the platen is illuminated by the light, and the light is imaged by an imaging device.Type: GrantFiled: July 28, 1998Date of Patent: February 13, 2001Assignee: Digital Persona, Inc.Inventor: Kenneth Brownlee

Patent number: 6122737Abstract: A method, apparatus, and article of manufacture for distributing information from a provider to a user over a network. User fingerprint data is obtained from the user and transferred to the provider via the network. The provider injects the user fingerprint data into an information access program and transfers the information access program back to the user via the network. Direct user fingerprint data is then obtained from the user and compared to the injected user fingerprint data. If there is a match, the user is enabled to use the information access program.Type: GrantFiled: November 14, 1997Date of Patent: September 19, 2000Assignee: Digital Persona, Inc.Inventors: Vance Bjorn, Fabio Righi

Patent number: 6097035Abstract: A fingerprint detection apparatus which includes a detection array having a detection surface, and a fingerprint platform configured to supply a plurality of partial fingerprint images of a fingerprint to the detection surface as the fingerprint is moved relative to the detection surface. The fingerprint detection apparatus also includes a processing device that is configured to construct a final fingerprint image from the plurality of partial fingerprint images supplied to the detection surface. A method of detecting a fingerprint image comprising the steps of: (1) supplying a plurality of partial fingerprint images of a fingerprint to a detection surface of a detection array as the fingerprint is moved relative to the detection surface; and (2) constructing a final fingerprint image from the plurality of partial fingerprint images.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 1999Date of Patent: August 1, 2000Assignee: Digital Persona, Inc.Inventors: Serge J. Patent number: 5796858Abstract: In one embodiment, a fingerprint sensing system includes a sheet prism having a sensing surface and a number of prismlets positioned opposite to the sensing surface. Each prismlet has an entrance surface and an exit surface, and is adjacent to another prismlet. The width of the sheet is more than ten times the maximum thickness of any one of the prismlets. When a finger is positioned on the sensing surface, a portion of the radiation entering a number of the entrance surfaces and incident at the sensing surface is reflected through total internal reflection. The reflected radiation emits from a number of the exit surfaces to create an image of the fingerprint. In another embodiment, the system further includes a second sheet prism stacked together with the previously described sheet prism. The second sheet prism has a flat surface and a number of prismlets positioned opposite to the flat surface, which faces the prismlets of the previously described sheet prism.Type: GrantFiled: May 10, 1996Date of Patent: August 18, 1998Assignee: Digital Persona, Inc.Inventors: Gan Zhou, Yong Qiao, Fai Mok
