Abstract: The present invention discloses an adjustable base for a portable saw and a portable saw therefore. The base includes a longitudinal shell secured to the housing, and mounted to a baseplate. A shaft is mounted to the housing extending through a slot formed in the shell. A collar is connected to the shaft and has a first cam surface cooperating with a corresponding second cam surface of the housing. Rotation of the collar in an unlocked direction extends the shaft away from the housing. A clamp member is received within a shell inner region and cooperates with the shaft. The shaft is threadably engaged to one of the collar, the housing or the clamp member so that rotation of the collar in the unlocked direction either extends the shaft further away from the housing or extends the clamp member along the shaft away from the housing.

Abstract: A saw such as a chop saw, a circular saw, a compound miter saw or a sliding compound miter saw having a rotatable saw blade is provided with a laser arbor alignment system. The laser arbor may include a power generator that generates power as the saw blade and the laser arbor are rotated by a spindle. The generator may include a stator comprising an electrical magnet or a permanent magnet mounted on a fixed portion of the saw. The other portion of the generator is a rotor comprising a coil that is rotated with the laser arbor to generate power for the laser. Power may also be provided to the laser by slip ring contacts from a stationary source to the laser arbor.

Abstract: A hand-held power tool is provided with a housing, an attachment member, and an object sensor that is removable from the attachment member. The attachment member may be removable from the tool. The object sensor, which can be used to detect studs hidden behind walls, electrical lines, and other materials, is readily accessible to tradesmen.

Abstract: A portably log splitter is provided. The log splitter comprises a base having a pair of one-piece side members, and a support member to which the one-piece side members are attached. The support member and the one-piece side members form a seat that is adapted to receive a log. The log splitter also includes a splitting wedge that is attached to the support member and a contact member that is configured to translate in a reciprocal manner adjacent to the support member in order to move the log. The log splitter also includes a control assembly operated by a switch to actuate the contact member in the reciprocal manner.

Abstract: A modular tool assembly including a tool base configured to releasably secure a modular tool arrangement in a fixed relationship relative to a mounting surface. The tool base includes an upper housing portion and a lower housing portion having a mounting seal extending therefrom. The mounting seal cooperates with the mounting surface to define a vacuum pocket therebetween. A vacuum generating mechanism is configured to remove air from the vacuum pocket through an aperture in the lower housing portion. A modular tool attachment releasably engages a portion of the tool base to secure the modular tool attachment to the tool base.

Abstract: A battery venting system that is useful for cordless power tools. The system can include a cell that may have a sleeve with a plurality of apertures surrounding a peripheral side face of the cell to enhance heat dissipation from the cell. A plurality of cells may be electrically connected to form a cell pack. A carrier includes an upper carrier and a lower carrier to sandwich a plurality of cells that are aligned parallel to each other. The carriers include at least one vent hole that are aligned with a gap formed from adjacent cells to define an elongated fluid flow path. A charger may be provided to receive a housing containing the carrier and may be provided with a fan to direct a flow into the fluid flow path.

Abstract: A laser leveling device having a suction mounting arrangement includes a housing and a mounting seal extending from the lower portion of the housing. The mounting seal cooperates with an attachment surface to define a suction mounting area therebetween. The suction mounting arrangement cooperates with the mounting seal to maintain the vacuum pressure seal in the suction mounting area. A laser light source mounted within the housing in a planar relationship relative to the attachment surface includes at least one diode projecting an alignment beam through an opening in the housing to denote a reference plane along the attachment surface.

Abstract: A hand-held power tool having a housing and a removably attachable portion. The removably attachable portion, which comprises an object sensor to detect studs hidden behind walls, electrical lines, and other materials, is readily accessible to tradesmen. A level may also be included on the removably attachable portion.

Abstract: A battery ejection mechanism for ejecting a battery housing removably attached to an electrical device housing. The mechanism includes at least two ejection members, each having a button and an arm. The arms are adapted to transfer a force applied on the buttons to the electrical device housing to provide a pushing force for ejection of the battery pack from the electrical device housing. Force on the buttons also causes associated latches on the battery pack to move to their release position.

Abstract: A reciprocating saw is provided having a motor oriented within a housing for operably driving a saw bar and blade holder in a reciprocating motion. The blade holder has a longitudinal slot for receiving a saw blade, and a transverse aperture extending into the longitudinal slot for receiving a follower. A sleeve is pivotally mounted upon the body, and has a circum-axial cam groove formed therein cooperating with the follower. Rotation in a first lock direction urges the follower into the longitudinal slot for engaging the saw blade and rotation of the sleeve in a second unlock direction allows the follower to retract. A biasing member is included for biasing the sleeve in the first lock direction. The sleeve central bore is adapted to provide clearance for the follower such that the sleeve is permitted to axially translate relative to the body for assembly or disassembly of the blade holder.

Abstract: A compound miter saw having a bevel adjustment mechanism for adjusting the angle of inclination of a cutting disk relative to a top surface of a turntable. The bevel adjustment mechanism includes a first knuckle for adjusting the angle of inclination of the cutting disk about a tilt axis and a second knuckle for adjusting the upward and downward movement of the cutting disk. The first knuckle includes a fixed portion mounted adjacent the outer periphery of the turntable and a rotating portion cooperating with the fixed portion. A scale and indicator are provided on the fixed and rotating portions to measure the angle of inclination of the saw assembly relative to the tilt axis. A locking mechanism secures the rotating portion to the fixed portion to secure the saw in a cutting position.
