Publication number: 20110082415Abstract: According to some embodiments, a microdermabrasion device for treating skin comprises a handpiece assembly having a distal end and a proximal end. The handpiece assembly includes at least one delivery conduit and at least one waste conduit. The microdermabrasion device additionally comprises a tip configured to be positioned along the distal end of the handpiece assembly, wherein the tip is adapted to contact skin surface. In several embodiments, the tip comprises a lip, a first opening in fluid communication with the fluid delivery conduit and a second opening in fluid communication with the waste conduit. In one embodiment, the device includes one or more abrasive elements positioned along a distal end of the tip, wherein the abrasive elements are configured to selectively remove skin as the tip is moved relative to a skin surface. In some embodiments, the delivery conduit is configured to selectively deliver at least one time-release material to the skin surface being treated.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 8, 2010Publication date: April 7, 2011Applicant: EDGE SYSTEMS CORPORATIONInventors: Roger Ignon, Ed F. Patent number: 6942649Abstract: A growth factor delivery system for use in connection with microdermabrasion includes a source of growth factors. The growth material may be dry and thus mixed in with the abrasion media. The dry growth material would therefore be applied to the target skin area simultaneously with the abrasion media by a single handpiece. The growth material may comprise a fluid to be delivered by a separate handpiece. The fluid source may be within the handpiece or external thereto. The fluid source may be contained in a removable cartridge adapted to fit within the handpiece. Thus, a method and system is provided for using disposable cartridges of growth fluids.Type: GrantFiled: December 10, 2002Date of Patent: September 13, 2005Assignee: Edge Systems CorporationInventors: Roger G. Ignon, Alejandro Herrera, William Cohen

Patent number: 6673082Abstract: A microdermabrasion handpiece includes a supply lumen and a return lumen in fluid communication with an abrasion chamber. A window formed at a distal end of the handpiece is off-centered from the supply lumen. The supply lumen directs a flow of abrasive particulate in a first direction. A supply nozzle adjacent to the distal end of the handpiece directs the flow of abrasive particulate at the window in a second direction different from the first direction. Methods for performing microdermabrasion are also provided.Type: GrantFiled: June 20, 2002Date of Patent: January 6, 2004Assignee: Edge Systems CorporationInventors: Scott R. Patent number: 6629983Abstract: A dermabrasion handpiece adapted for use to abrade the skin of a patient includes a housing extending along an axis between a proximal end and a distal end. Portions of the housing define a hole at the distal end with an abrasion element disposed in the housing in proximity to the hole. The housing is adapted for connection to a vacuum source to pull a portion of the skin through the hole and to move the skin portion into contact with the abrasion element. Movement of the abrader relative to the skin abrades tissue from the skin portion extending through the hole. The abrader can be provided in the form of a roller or blade moveable relative to the housing to abrade the skin. The abrasion element can be selected from a series of elements each having different abrasion characteristics and can be mounted in either the cap or the base of the housing.Type: GrantFiled: October 27, 2000Date of Patent: October 7, 2003Assignee: Edge Systems CorporationInventor: Roger G. Ignon

Patent number: 6592595Abstract: Microdermabrasion and suction massage apparatus are included in a single unit and alternatively connectable through a mode switch to a source of vacuum. The microdermabrasion section of the unit includes a crystal pick up station operating with a venturi effect to draw crystals through a hole into an air stream. The size of the hole is variable to control crystal density. A bleed valve is provided to control crystal velocity without controlling crystal density, while a bypass valve is provided to control crystal density without controlling crystal velocity. In an associated method, a microdermabrasion procedure is performed on the skin of a patient at an operative site. The mode switch is operated to activate the suction massage apparatus within the unit. This step is followed by performing a suction massage procedure at the operative site in order to promote healing of the abraded skin. The unit can be back flushed by connecting various portions of the unit to a pressurized output of the source of vacuum.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 2000Date of Patent: July 15, 2003Assignee: Edge Systems CorporationInventors: Scott R. Mallett, William Cohen, Roger G. Ignon
