    Abstract: A thermostat includes a housing having a cavity formed therein, a temperature responsive bimetallic disc located in the housing, a stationary contact member which is electrically interconnected to a first terminal external to the housing, and a movable contact member which is electrically interconnected to a second terminal external to the housing. The movable contact member movable between a switch-closed position and a switch-open position. An actuating member is located in the housing and is responsive to flexing movement of the disc for moving the movable contact member from the switch-closed position to the switch-open position. A reset assembly is provided for resetting the disc, and includes a reset element which is movable between a first position in which it is spaced from the actuating member and a second position in which it is axially moved to engage the actuating member for moving the disc back to its pre-flexed position.

    Abstract: A thermostatic switch has a housing and a temperature responsive bimetallic disc located in the housing and responsive to a predetermined temperature for exerting a flexing action. A fixed contact member is located in the cavity along with a movable contact member which is biased and movable between a switch-closed position in which it makes electrical contact with the fixed contact member and a switch-open position in which it is spaced from the fixed contact member. An actuating member is located in the housing, and is responsive to flexing movement of the disc for moving the movable contact member from the switch-closed position to the switch-open position. A hook portion is mounted within the cavity of the housing, the hook portion engaging an arm portion of the movable contact member upon the movement of the movable contact member to its switch-open position and entering an opening of the arm portion for retaining and maintaining the movable contact member in its switch open position.

    Abstract: A thermostatic switch has a contact arm which is adapted for reducing contact pressure and maximizing wiping action between fixed and movable contacts. The switch includes a housing, a pair of terminals mounted in the housing, a resilient contact arm connected to one of the terminals, a movable contact on the contact arm, a stationary contact connected to the other terminal, and an actuator assembly for opening and closing the switch. The contact arm is integrally struck from a resilient, electrically conductive metal and it includes a base portion, and a pair of supporting members extending outwardly and upwardly from the base portion and then bending back thereover merging into a main portion. The main portion includes a peripheral edge portion having a contact area, and a plurality of finger portions which converge inwardly therefrom and merge into an actuator portion.

    Abstract: A disc assembly for a bimetallic disc-actuated thermostatic switch is adapted to minimize response time. The switch includes a disc assembly comprising a disc retainer, and a bimetallic disc and a cap on the disc retainer. The disc retainer includes a central hub portion, a plurality of fingers which radiate outwardly from the hub portion, a plurality of disc retainer projections on the fingers adjacent the terminal ends thereof and a plurality of disc support shoulders on the fingers adjacent the disc retainer projections thereon. The fingers have open notches therebetween for reducing the cross sectional area of the material available in the disc retainer for conducting heat from the bimetallic disc to the body portion of a thermostatic switch on which the disc assembly is installed.

    Abstract: A thermally activated snap-action valve includes a valve body having an interior cavity and inlet and outlet passages formed therein and a bimetallic disc, a ball element, and a resilient positioning plate in the cavity. The positioning plate is operative for normally positioning the ball element in inwardly spaced relation to a valve seat at the inner end of the outlet passage, and the bimetallic disc is mounted in the cavity so that the pressures in a fluid passing through the valve are substantially equal on opposite sides of the bimetallic disc. The bimetallic disc is operative with a flexing action in response to a predetermined temperature condition for moving the ball element to a closed position wherein it is received in the valve seat to obstruct the outward flow of fluid through the outlet passage.

The cap has at least one air circulation opening therethrough, and the support disc is formed so that air from the exterior of the cap can pass through the air circulation opening and across the underside of the bimetallic disc to provide increased responsiveness to ambient conditions.

    Abstract: A thermally actuated latch for electrical circuits is permanently operative for completing an electrical circuit upon exposure to a predetermined elevated temperature. The latch includes a fixed contact, a movable contact arm which is biased toward the fixed contact, a movable contact on the movable contact arm, and a deformable pellet. The deformable pellet communicates with the movable contact arm through a communicator disc to normally maintain the movable contact in spaced relation with the fixed contact. The pellet is deformable to a disposition of reduced profile upon exposure to a predetermined elevated temperature to allow the movable contact to be resiliently moved into engagement with the fixed contact in order to complete an electrical circuit connected to the latch.

    Abstract: A cap and bracket assembly for a bimetallic disc actuated thermostatic switch comprises a metallic heat transfer bracket having an aperture therethrough and a metallic cup-shaped cap which is receivable on the housing or body of a thermostatic switch for containing a bimetallic disc. The cap comprises a main portion and a reduced terminal end portion, and the end portion is received in the aperture in the bracket and crimped or swaged to capture the bracket in intimate engagement between the main portion and terminal end portion so that maximum thermal transfer between the cap and the bracket is assured. The method of manufacturing the cap and bracket assembly comprises the steps of assembling the cap with the bracket and crimping or swaging the end portion of the cap to secure the bracket thereto.

    Abstract: A magnetically operated AC switching device, such as an AC electrical contactor, is operable with a delay-on-dropout feature to permit safe shutdown of equipment energized therethrough in case of power failure. The device includes an AC pickup winding which is energizable from an AC power source and a DC holding winding which is electrically connected to a rectifier for energization of the holding winding with DC power from the AC source. A capacitor is also electrically connected to the rectifier in parallel with the holding winding for energization with DC power from the AC source. Upon energization of the device, the AC pickup winding moves fixed and movable contacts of the device into engagement, and the DC holding winding maintains them in engagement. The AC pickup winding can remain energized without burnout; and upon power dropout the capacitor supplies DC power to the holding winding for an instant to provide a slight delay in the separation of the contacts.

    Abstract: A bimetallic disc actuated thermostatic switch with thermal override comprises a base, a fixed contact on the base, a movable contact and a bimetallic disc which moves the movable contact into and out of engagement with the fixed contact to effect or interrupt continuity therebetween. A thermal override pellet which melts or deforms in response to an excessive temperature is provided in a cavity in the base and the fixed contact is mounted on a resilient arm which overlies the pellet. When an excessive temperature is reached, the pellet fuses or deforms and the fixed contact arm and the fixed contact move toward the base to separate the fixed and movable contacts even when the latter is in its normally engaged position.

    Abstract: A bimetallic, disc-actuated, thermostatic switch comprising a resiliently deformable actuator disc having an integrally struck actuator arm which extends radially inwardly to a point adjacent to a fixed contact. When the bimetallic disc is flexed in response to a predetermined temperature change, it applies pressure to the edge of the actuator disc proximal to the stem of the actuator arm causing the actuator disc to be resiliently deformed and causing the arm to be pivoted on a fulcrum in the switch, thereby causing the terminal end of the arm to move relative to the fixed contact to either open or close the switch. Since the arrangement is such that the edge of the bimetallic disc exerts pressure on the actuator disc, maximum deformation is imparted to the actuator disc thereby achieving maximum movement of the actuator arm for a given size bimetallic disc, thus permitting relatively small discs to be successfully utilized.

    Abstract: A construction for a single pole double throw thermostatic switch of the type having a bimetallic disc which communicates with a resilient contact arm to alternatively effect electrical continuity between the arm and a pair of fixed contacts, and a method of assembling and adjusting the same. One of the fixed contacts comprises a bendable arm so that the gap between the fixed contacts is adjustable by bending the arm prior to final assembly of the switch. Because the gap is set prior to the final assembly of the switch, substantial increases in precision and reliability are realized since the contacts may be observed during setting thereof. Furthermore, the necessity for an external gap setting adjustment screw on the switch is eliminated.

A reset mechanism in said switch provides for closing of the circuit therein, but only after the temperature has returned the bimetallic disc to the switch closed position. For example, a bimetallic member may move a switch component to the open position where it is releasably retained until the temperature change has reversed and the release mechanism is positively operated.
