  • Patent number: 7034926
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for producing vaccine within a plurality of eggs are provided. Each of a plurality of eggs is illuminated with light from one or more LEDs. A detector is positioned adjacent each egg and detects light passing therethrough. Each egg is then identified as containing a live embryo or as being a non-live egg. Each egg that is determined not to contain a live embryo may be removed, either automatically or by hand. A seed virus is injected into each egg identified as containing a live embryo. After a predetermined period of incubation each live embryo is euthanized and amniotic fluid containing a vaccine produced as a result of the presence of a seed virus is harvested from each euthanized egg.

  • Patent number: 6989238
Abstract: A method of determining the gender of a bird in ovo comprises detecting the presence or absence of an elevated level of a sex-related hormone in the extra-embryonic fluid of the bird egg, and then determining the gender of the bird within the egg from the presence of an elevated level of a sex-related hormone therein. In particular embodiments, the sex-related hormone is an estrogen. In other representative embodiments, the invention provides methods in which the extra-embryonic fluid is allantoic fluid. In other illustrative embodiments, the method can be carried out on chicken eggs prior to or during transfer of the eggs from incubator to hatcher.

  • Patent number: 6860225
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for identifying live eggs utilize a cup having a photodetector therewithin that overlies a portion of an egg. The egg is illuminated via a light source positioned adjacent the egg. Variations in the intensity of light passing through the egg is detected via the photodetector which generates an output signal corresponding to detected light intensity. The output signal is processed to identify cyclical and non-cyclical variations in light intensity. The egg is designated as a live egg in response to identifying cyclical and/or non-cyclical variations in light intensity.

  • Patent number: 6834615
Abstract: Methods of pooling or localizing the allantoic fluid present in avian shell eggs, so that the fluid may be sampled, assessed or injected, are described. The methods involve tilting the avian shell egg so that the major axis of the egg is from about 10 to 180 degrees from the vertically upright position, so that the allantois pools under the uppermost portion of the egg shell. The allantoic fluid may then be sampled, or a substance injected into the allantois, by a vertical needle or probe traveling in a downward direction.

  • Patent number: 6811017
Abstract: An egg transfer apparatus is configured to distribute eggs substantially evenly with reduced breakage on a moving conveyor. The egg transfer apparatus includes a conveyor having opposite first and second ends, a pair of elongated members that extend along the direction of travel of the conveyor between the conveyor first and second ends, and a plurality of spaced-apart, diverging guides positioned downstream from the elongated members. Each elongated member includes opposite first and second end portions. The first end portions of the elongated members are in generally parallel, spaced-apart relationship, and the second end portions have an arcuate configuration and converge to define an opening therebetween through which eggs on the conveyor are conveyed. The diverging guides are positioned downstream from the opening and cause the eggs passing through the opening to be generally evenly distributed at the conveyor second end.

  • Patent number: 6750954
Abstract: Systems and methods for rapidly identifying live eggs within a stream of eggs with high accuracy, are provided. A stream of eggs are candled via a candling apparatus and each candled egg is designated as being either live, non-live, or “uncertain”. Eggs designated as non-live and uncertain are removed from the stream. Each egg designated as uncertain is “recandled” at a separate station via an additional candling procedure in order to definitively determine if the “uncertain” egg is live or non-live. Uncertain eggs identified as being live via recandling are returned to the egg stream such that the stream contains only live eggs. The uncertain eggs determined to be non-live via recandling are removed and are either discarded or used for other purposes.

  • Patent number: 6601534
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for forming an opening in a shell of an avian egg such that the potential for cracking is greatly reduced are provided and comprise moving a punch through an egg shell at speeds equal to or greater than thirty (30) inches per second. Punches may be driven via various devices including gravity-assisted devices, spring-assisted devices, solenoid-assisted devices, and fluid-assisted (e.g., compressed air, compressed nitrogen, liquid, etc.) devices. The shell of an egg may be pierced without causing cracking by hurling one or more small projectiles at the egg shell at speeds in excess of 30 inches per second. A punch may be mounted on a piezoelectric actuator configured to vibrate at frequencies in a range of between about 1,000 Hz and about 100,000 Hz. These frequencies effectively cause a punch to move at speeds in excess of 30 inches per second.

  • Patent number: 6535277
Abstract: Methods and apparatus that can non-invasively identify the present condition of eggs, namely, whether an egg is a live egg, a clear egg, an early dead egg, a middle dead egg, a late dead egg, a rotted egg, a cracked egg, and/or an inverted egg, are provided. An egg is illuminated with both visible and invisible light at wavelengths of between about three hundred nanometers and about eleven hundred nanometers (300 nm-1,100 nm). Light passing through the egg is received at a detector positioned such that a path of the received light does not pass through an aircell within the egg, except in the case of an inverted egg. The intensity of the light is determined at a plurality of the visible and infrared wavelengths, and a spectrum that represents light intensity at selected ones of the visible and infrared wavelengths is generated. The generated spectrum is compared with one or more spectra associated with a respective known egg condition to identify a present condition of the egg.

  • Patent number: 6506385
Abstract: Disclosed herein are methods and pharmaceutical formulations for administering vaccines to birds. In preferred embodiments, the invention provides methods of administering live pathogenic virus vaccines to birds in ovo, more preferably, during the last quarter of in ovo incubation. Interferon, more preferably, Type I interferon, may be advantageously administered in conjunction with live virus vaccines to decrease the pathogenicity thereof. Interferon must be provided at doses sufficient to protect against pathogenicity of the live vaccine, but not at doses so high as to prevent the host from mounting an active immune response. Further provided are pharmaceutical formulations comprising effective doses of live vaccine and interferon. Finally, the present invention provides methods of administering interferon together with live vaccines to young avians to effectively overcome the interfering effects of maternal antibodies.
