  • Patent number: 4797564
Abstract: An overload detection mechanism for a robot is disclosed, wherein first and second members are relatively urged together by an urging means to urge the axis of the second member toward the Z axis of the first member. The second member is guided in any movements departing from coaxial alignment, and the first member is supported near the end of a robot arm. A tool mount or workpiece mount is connected to the second member. An electrical device is mounted on one of the members, and a device actuator on the other of the members, with the reaction means acting between the members to relatively move the members upon tilting from an X-Y plane normal to the Z axis, or axial thrust applied by the tool mount to the second member. In this manner, an overload of a tool in the tool mount establishes relative movement between the first and second members, so that the electrical device is actuated to change an electrical condition thereof and can be connected to stop movement of the robot.

  • Patent number: 4710077
Abstract: A locking tool holder is disclosed which has a socket adapted to receive a tool which has a lateral recess. The tool holder contains a lock pin which is slidable in a first aperture transverse to the tool socket, and this lock pin has a wedge portion on the inboard end thereof to engage a tapered lateral recess on the tool. A cam bar is slidable transversely to the lock pin in another aperture in the tool holder, and has first and second cam surfaces to cooperate with first and second cam followers on the lock pin. The cam bar may be moved manually or by a spring into a first locked position, whereat the second cam engages the second cam follower on the lock pin to force the lock pin wedge portion against the lateral recess in the tool. When the cam bar is moved into the second position, the first cam surface engages the first cam follower on the lock pin to withdraw the lock pin from the tool so that the tool may be removed from the tool socket.

  • Patent number: 4597699
Abstract: A quick-connect and quick-disconnect mechanism includes a male member which may be received in a female socket member. Cam means is journaled in an eccentric cam follower surface in the socket and is capable of rotation about a second axis displaced from the axis of the socket. A locking surface on the cam means faces in a longitudinal direction opposite the entrance of the socket and opposite that of a lockable abutment surface on the male member. An aperture in the cam means is sufficiently large to accommodate the entrance of the lockable abutment surface on the male member. The cam means is rotatable within the cam follower surface to move the cam locking surface with a radially inward component and a component of movement in a longitudinal direction away from the entrance of the socket to engage the lockable abutment surface to lock the male member in the socket. The cam means may also have an expelling surface to aid in expelling the male member from the socket.

  • Patent number: 4571129
Abstract: An apparatus and method is provided for an air bearing support of a rotatable tooling bar, such as a boring bar. One or two mandrels may be provided for this tooling bar to form a complete mandrel assembly with the tooling bar. An air pressure expansible collet is provided on each mandrel so that each may be clamped within a clamping aperture, such as an aperture on the workpiece itself. Air under pressure is supplied to the two mandrels simultaneously to accomplish, first, an air bearing centering of each mandrel around the tooling bar as a guide; second, an expansion of the collet on each mandrel for clamping of each mandrel within the clamping apertures; and, third, provision of an air bearing support and centering of the tooling bar within the two mandrels during machining for precise machining of the workpiece by the continued air supply.

  • Patent number: 4364694
Abstract: A tap holder characterized in that its cylindrical shank is axially movably and non-rotatably keyed within a tubular socket of a housing by keys having rolling engagement with complemental axially extending V grooves in the shank and in drive blocks disposed in axially extending slots of the socket, and engaged within a retainer sleeve which locates the drive blocks and keys coaxially of the shank for uniform distribution of torque loads to prevent high pressure sliding contact of the shank with the socket under torque load during relative axial movement of the housing and tap holder. The shank is additionally spring-connected to the socket by two coil springs both of which yieldably oppose relative axial movement in one direction and but one of which yieldably opposes relative axial movement in the opposite direction.

  • Patent number: 4298208
Abstract: A spring actuated chuck wherein a slotted flange, tapered shank tool adapter is clamped to a holder by a spring actuated clamping and ejecting nut assembly which includes a nut having threaded engagement with the holder, a clamping ring rotatably adjustably secured to the nut having clamping lugs to engage the flange of the adapter to clamp the adapter to the holder, an ejector axially retained in the nut and non-rotatably axially slidably engaged with the holder to engage the flange of the adapter thus to release the adapter from the holder, and a latch member extending axially from the holder and engaged with the clamping ring operative upon movement by the flange of the adapter to release the nut assembly for spring actuated clamping movement. Release of the adapter is effected by rotation of the nut in the opposite direction against spring pressure for engagement of the ejector with the flange of the adapter and for re-engagement of the latch member with the clamping ring.

  • Patent number: 4277209
Abstract: A reversible driver for a threading tool, such as a tap or die, is disclosed. The driver has rotary input and output members with a forward clutch connected therebetween and a reverse clutch connected through reverse gearing between the input and the output members. Each clutch has drive and driven clutch elements and a first spring urges both forward and reverse clutches toward engagement. A second spring is stronger than the first spring and urges the forward clutch toward engagement so that a tap rotated by the output member will tap a hole in a workpiece until the forward clutch is released. Each clutch utilizes a plurality of substantially hemispherical projections engaging longitudinal abutments as a form of dog clutch. The foregoing abstract is merely a resume of one general application, is not a complete discussion of all principles of operation or applications, and is not to be construed as a limitation on the scope of the claimed subject matter.

  • Patent number: 4155564
Abstract: A chuck is disclosed wherein the jaws of the chuck may be locked by tapered lock means so that if actuating force on the chucking and unchucking actuator is lost during rotation of the chuck, the external diameter of the workpiece will still be gripped by the jaws. A first linkage in the chuck body interconnects an axially movable actuator with the radially movable master jaws. This may be a bell crank lever or an interconnecting wedge. First lost motion means is provided in this first linkage. A second linkage is provided from the actuator to the tapered lock means and includes a second lost motion means which is smaller than the first lost motion means. A spring urges the tapered lock means into a locked position when the workpiece is chucked and then if force is lost on the actuator, this tapered lock means acting on the master jaws prevents release of the workpiece.
