  • Patent number: 7557723
Abstract: A system for evaluating at least one tripping stimulus for a ground-fault circuit interrupter includes: a sensing circuit configured to measure a leakage current from a voltage line to ground, wherein the sensing circuit is capable of generating a leakage signal including a voltage representative of the leakage current; and an evaluating circuit configured to evaluate the leakage signal to generate an indication signal, wherein the indication signal includes information corresponding to the at least one tripping stimulus. The sensing circuit may include a circuit substantially similar to at least a portion of a ground-fault circuit interrupter, and the evaluating circuit may include a peak hold circuit. The system may further include an indicator circuit for receiving the indication signal and displaying a status of the tripping conditions.

  • Patent number: 7099130
Abstract: A voltage monitor module is operable to monitor a characteristic of an input voltage to a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) device and generate a fault signal that causes the GFCI device to enter a de-energized state when the characteristic of the input voltage is not within a defined tolerance.

  • Patent number: 5173673
Abstract: A resettable switching apparatus for selectively interrupting a circuit connecting power from a first terminal to a second terminal when a ground fault occurs. The apparatus may be manually or electrically set. However, the contacts are held by a permanent magnet in the closed position such that no current is required. When a ground fault is detected, a current is generated to force the contacts to the open position.

  • Patent number: 5051732
Abstract: A plug-mounted wriststrap detector and ground monitor includes hot, neutral and ground input terminals which are connected to corresponding terminals of a power outlet when the circuit is plugged in. A jack is provided to plug a wriststrap into the circuit to provide electrostatic protection to the user. Means are provided to detect that the user is wearing the wriststrap and that the wriststrap is properly connected to the circuit as a function of whether an a.c. signal of sufficient amplitude is detected coupled to the circuit by the wriststrap and/or user. Lamps and an audible alarm warn the user if the wriststrap is not properly connected. A precision ground integrity circuit is provided to detect whether an unsafe ground condition exists and to alert the user accordingly. The ground integrity circuit uses a constant current source and voltage comparator to determine that the ground impedance does not exceed a predetermined limit.

  • Patent number: 4893101
Abstract: A resettable circuit interrupter in a ground fault detector circuit utilizes a housing which slideably retains a solenoid coil wound on a bobbin. A contact carrier is attached to the bobbin and one or more moveable contacts are provided on the carrier opposite a corresponding set of fixed contacts. A plunger slides through a central passageway in the solenoid coil. The bobbin is spring biased so that the contacts are in a normally open position. In a manually resettable version, when the solenoid coil conducts a predetermined current, manually activating the plunger causes the plunger to magnetically couple to a footplate attached to the bobbin. When a plunger spring returns the plunger to its original position, the bobbin and contact carrier move with it and the contacts are closed. When the solenoid coil conducts insufficient current to magnetically couple the plunger and footplate, the bias springs maintain the contacts in the normally open position.

  • Patent number: 4298864
Abstract: A power line fault detector (10) includes a capacitive impedance (12) and another impedance (14) connected in series between the hot and ground conductors of the power line, with a trigger circuit (16) being connected between the neutral conductor of the power line and the junction of the impedances. The impedances have values selected such that the voltage at the junction thereof with respect to the neutral conductor does not exceed a preselected limit unless the power line is faultily connected. The trigger circuit normally has a high impedance but switches to a low impedance when the voltage across it exceeds the preselected limit, then producing a surge of capacitive impedance charging current. A sensing circuit (20, 21, 26) senses the surges of current in the trigger circuit and provides an indication to the operator that the power line is faulted.
