  • Patent number: 10637818
Abstract: A system and method are provided for enabling a password reset mechanism for a secured device that verifies a digital signature on a password reset message. The password reset message has been generated by a password reset service for an authorized administrator associated with the secured device. The password reset mechanism allows the authorized administrator to make a request to the password reset service for a password reset, and receive the password reset message such that a password reset can be performed at the secured device. In this way, the secured device's password can be reset absent a connection to a command and control center or other service.

  • Patent number: 10484351
Abstract: A system and method are provided for certificate selection in infrastructures such as those planned to be used for V2V messaging, wherein the vehicle (or other moving object)'s location is used to aid in the selection of certificates. In one aspect, there is provided a method of selecting certificates for vehicle-to-vehicle messaging, the method comprising: determining a location for a vehicle; and adapting reuse of certificates in a certificate pool for the vehicle according to the location. In another aspect, there is provided a method of selecting certificates for vehicle-to-vehicle messaging, the method comprising: determining an amount of messaging activity; and adapting reuse of certificates in a certificate pool for the vehicle according to the amount of messaging activity.

  • Patent number: 10437977
Abstract: A communication system involving an access point, a vehicle and a user is provided. The vehicle and user possess a registration code, the user possesses a public and private key pair, and the access point and vehicle possess certificates and associated private keys. The access point issues a certificate to the user associated with the user's public and private keys, and the certificate of the access point is known and trusted by the vehicle. The access point signs a message granting ownership of the vehicle to the user, and the identity of the user indicates the user's certificate. The vehicle conditionally accepts the ownership registration request of the user.

  • Patent number: 10019530
Abstract: A method used to authenticate an item using an identification tag is provided. At the time of manufacture, the tags are created with various hardware attributes (HA), including a unique identifier (UID); and encoded with a signature of a message that includes a URL, and optionally a serial number associated with a product to which the tag is to be attached. The URL embeds various data such as one or more of the HAs, a serial number, etc., which can be used to verify the authenticity of the tag when verifying the signature. When a tag is read, the message including the URL is recovered and the signature is verified by the processor of the reader. This can be done to ensure that the URL in the message is one designated by the signer. The data in the signature can then be used to verify the authenticity of the tag and/or to detect tampering. The results of the verification can also be displayed to a user, e.g., using an available display on the electronic device including or otherwise acting as the tag reader.

  • Patent number: 9774632
Abstract: A system and method are provided for having a device in a communication system update an operational policy for the device by encoding a policy update in a virtual machine language used by a virtual machine on the device, having the policy update signed by a trusted entity, and sending a message comprising the signed policy update to the device to enable the device to implement the policy update using the virtual machine on the device. A system and method are also provided for updating an operational policy on a device in a communication system by receiving, at the device, a message comprising a signed policy update that has been signed by a trusted entity, the policy update being encoded in a virtual machine language used by a virtual machine on the device, verifying the signed policy update, and implementing the policy update using the virtual machine on the device when the policy update is verified.

  • Patent number: 9705683
Abstract: An implicit certificate cryptosystem uses an implicit certificate that includes a pair of certificate components. One of the certificate components includes a public key reconstruction data that is the combination of ephemeral public keys of two entities, one of which is a trusted entity and the other of which is associated with the implicit certificate. The public key reconstruction data is then combined with the identity of the other entity and the combination encrypted to form a first certificate component. A second certificate component is generated by using the first certificate component as a message in a signature scheme and generating a signature of the trusted entity on the message. The two certificate components are provided to the other entity to permit the other entity to generate a private key using one of the certificate components. The corresponding public key can be derived from the remaining certificate component.
