Abstract: Device and method for initiating an explosive charge, for example in an aircraft canopy jettisoning system. The initiator has an operating handle which is swung from a safe position to an armed position and then pushed to move a slide and actuate a firing mechanism. The device has a low profile and can be used in applications where space is limited.
Abstract: Pyrotechnic/explosive initiator for use with a detonating cord or fuse comprising an elongated hollow tube with a longitudinally extending channel through which a gaseous percussion wave is propagated. The initiator includes a charge of pyrotechnic or explosive material and a valve for cutting off communication between the gas channel and the charge upon initiation of the charge to prevent gases and other reaction products from being exhausted back into the fuse.
Abstract: Device for coupling an ignitive reaction or percussive shock wave to a relatively movable body member such as an airbag mounted on the steering wheel of an automobile. The device includes first and second relatively movable body members with a transmission channel for ignitive reactions in one of the body members. Pyrotechnic transmission lines are connected to the body members with the gas channels of the transmission lines positioned for communication with the transmission channel notwithstanding relative movement of the body members.
Abstract: Non-detonative linear ignitor fuse for substantially instantaneous ignition of materials distributed along the exterior length of the fuse. The fuse includes a core of non-detonative, ignitive material encased within an imperforate frangible sheath which is ruptured by combustion of the core material. A gas channel extends longitudinally of the fuse adjacent to the ignitive material. As the ignitive reaction travels along the length of the fuse, the sheath is shattered, and incandescent reaction products are spewed from the fuse in a generally radial direction.
Abstract: Light source utilizing pyrotechnic and phosphorescent materials to provide a sustained glow or light. The device includes an elongated tubular casing of light transmissive material, a core of pryotechnic material within the casing, and a phosphorescent material in the wall of the casing which is activated by light produced in ignition of the pyrotechnic material.
