Patent number: 8099295Abstract: The invention provides a computer-implemented method for creating a prescription for treatment of an injury or illness covered by a workers' compensation system, which facilitates on-line adjudication of a workers' compensation claim. The patient name, employer name and type and quantity of medication prescribed are input. Routing data including a processor identification number is retrieved from an employer database. The program outputs prescription data comprising the name of the patient, the type and quantity of medication prescribed, and the routing data. The prescription data is preferably NCPDP compliant and used by a pharmacy to route a workers' compensation claim and fill the prescription.Type: GrantFiled: February 4, 2003Date of Patent: January 17, 2012Assignee: Express Scripts, Inc.Inventors: Pritpal S. Patent number: 8091320Abstract: A system for automatically packaging prescription orders composed of one or more prescription containers. The system includes a printer for generating literature associated with each order and a packer for packing the prescription containers and the associated literature into a package. The packer has a scale or other means for determining the weight of the prescription containers. A packer controller calculates package weight information based on the container weight information. The package weight information is transmitted to a mail manifest system, which generates shipping information comprising postage. A labeler applies the shipping information to the package. The packer also includes a loading mechanism for inserting the prescription containers and the literature into the package.Type: GrantFiled: September 23, 2010Date of Patent: January 10, 2012Assignee: Express Scripts, Inc.Inventor: Michael L. Publication number: 20110307271Abstract: Methods for determining whether a drug is a specialty drug, methods for creating tools to be used in making the determination, and the tools themselves are disclosed. The overall value of a drug depends on the drug's attribute values with respect to each of a set of drug attributes (concerning, e.g., the drug's route of administration, targeted disease, possible adverse reactions, risk of toxicity, cost, need for patient compliance with the treatment regime, and handling, preparation, and/or storage requirements. If the overall value or its partial overall values meet certain criteria, the drug is deemed to be a specialty drug.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 25, 2011Publication date: December 15, 2011Applicant: Express Scripts, Inc.Inventors: Edmond Weisbart, Andrew Behm, Aimee Tharaldson, Steven Miller

Publication number: 20110299757Abstract: The invention is directed to a prescription imaging system for capturing, storing and displaying images of prescription bottles during the prescription fulfillment process to monitor the quality of the fulfillment process. The system includes one or more pill cameras for capturing images of pills dispensed into one or more prescription bottles and one or more label cameras for capturing images of the bottle labels. The images are stored on a storage device in a database record. The images can be used to verify that the pills in each bottle correspond with the associated prescription.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 13, 2011Publication date: December 8, 2011Applicant: EXPRESS SCRIPTS, INC.Inventors: Charles E. Eller, Herbert A. Youngs

Publication number: 20090313039Abstract: This invention provides for innovative methods of pricing generic drugs. In a preferred embodiment, wholesale acquisition costs of identified comparable brand drugs for the generic drugs to be priced according to the invention are identified as comparable brand drug values. The comparable brand drug values are averaged to calculate a stable, predictable benchmark value to be used to determine the price of the generic drug, according to methods of this invention.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 17, 2008Publication date: December 17, 2009Applicant: Express Scripts, Inc.Inventor: Jacob Cedergreen

Patent number: 7376574Abstract: A computer-based system and method to enable a benefit plan sponsor to design benefit plans for a given participant population by enabling the plan designer to select the plan design options that maximize the perceived benefit to the participant population subject to a cost constraint. The system prioritizes plan design options of such plans according to the costs of these options and the perceived benefits of these options for the participant population. Estimates of perceived benefit are based upon survey data from a sample of the given population or from historical survey data from population samples exhibiting analogous demographic characteristics to the given participant population regarding potential plan design options or analogous benefit plan design options.Type: GrantFiled: January 12, 2001Date of Patent: May 20, 2008Assignee: Express Scripts, Inc.Inventors: Barrett Toan, Robert Nease

Patent number: 7313898Abstract: In a container carrier system and method for use in an automated process for filling containers of multiple sizes, pucks of various sizes are inserted into compartments of container pallets to allow containers of different sizes to be held in the compartments. A puck configuration subsystem can be used to configure each pallet to hold a desired combination of containers of two or more container sizes by inserting and removing pucks from the compartments. A pallet conveyor can be used to transport configured pallets from the puck configuration subsystem to the filling process and return empty pallets to the puck configuration subsystem for reconfiguration.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 2003Date of Patent: January 1, 2008Assignee: Express Scripts, Inc.Inventors: Charles E. Eller, Thomas C. Pegg
