  • Patent number: 6982409
Abstract: A measurement system is provided for a ball joint of a crash test dummy. The measurement system includes a light source operatively supported by a movable ball of the ball joint and a position sensitive detector operatively supported by a fixed member of the ball joint. The measurement system also includes a controller electrically connected to the light source to provide power to the light source for emitting light and electrically connected to the position sensitive detector that receives the emitted light to measure at least two angles between the ball and the fixed member.

  • Patent number: 5741989
Abstract: A lower leg assembly includes laceration indicators at a knee joint and at a front of a tibia. The tibia is connected to a thigh of a dummy by a pivot arm and a potentiometer is provided for measuring relative motion between the tibia and the pivot arm. A damper is positioned between the tibia and the pivot arm. A load cell is connected between the tibia and a lower leg to ankle connector. The connector is pivotally connected to an ankle joint and the ankle joint has a ball which cooperates with a socket formed in a foot assembly to simulate the range of motion of a human foot-ankle joint. Cushions are provided at the connector to ankle joint connection and the ball to socket connection to return the ankle and foot to a neutral position.

  • Patent number: 5528943
Abstract: An apparatus for simulating a pregnant female human during a crash test includes a torso having an abdominal cavity formed therein. A fetal insert assembly includes a fetal body simulating a human fetus with a head portion connected to a chest portion and a fetal insert defining a fetal cavity for retaining the fetal body. The fetal insert and fetal body are removably retained in an insert cavity in an abdominal shell which is removably retained in the abdominal cavity. A wall of the fetal cavity has an elongated slit formed therein can be deformed to separate the abutting sides and form an opening through which the fetal body is inserted into and removed from the fetal cavity. A first triaxial accelerometer is mounted in the head portion and a second triaxial accelerometer is mounted in chest portion of the fetal body for sensing acceleration in each of the three predetermined directions when force applied to the abdominal shell causes the fetal body to move.

  • Patent number: 5526707
Abstract: An apparatus for simulating a pregnant female human during a crash test includes a torso having an abdominal cavity formed therein for receiving a fetal abdominal assembly. The fetal abdominal assembly includes a fetal body simulating a human fetus in shape and weight, a fetal insert with a fetal cavity for receiving the fetal body and an abdominal shell removably retained in the abdominal cavity with an insert cavity for receiving the fetal insert. The fetal insert has a wall with an elongated slit formed therein whereby when the wall is deformed, an opening is formed through which the fetal body is inserted into and removed from the fetal cavity. The fetal abdominal insert and the fetal body are formed from different castable urethane elastomer materials. The abdominal shell and a chest flesh assembly are formed from a polyurethane foam.

  • Patent number: 5317931
Abstract: A sensor for measuring the deflection of a thorax of an anthropomorphic dummy includes a base for mounting on a thoracic spine assembly, a tape drum rotatably mounted on the base, at least a pair of spring tapes each having one end connected to the base and an opposite end attached to the tape drum, the spring tapes biasing the tape drum for rotation in a predetermined direction, and a displacement tape having one end attached to and being wound about the tape drum in a direction opposite the predetermined direction and having an opposite end for attachment to a rib set of the dummy. The sensors are mounted in four pairs on the spine assembly and the opposite end of the displacement tapes of each pair are attached together to a different point on the rib set. The sensors in each pair are spaced apart a first predetermined distance along a Y axis and a ninth sensor is spaced a second predetermined distance from one of the other sensors along a Z axis.
