    Abstract: A method for machining surfaces of revolution at workpieces comprises the eps of: rotating the workpiece during machining; roughing the workpiece with a disk-shaped tool having at its circumferential edge cutting elements with cutting edges; and, for finishing the workpiece, plunge-cutting by turning the workpiece with the disk-shaped tool, wherein the step of plunge-cutting by turning is divided into a sequence of individual plunge-cutting by turning steps so that material of overlapping portions of the workpiece is removed sequentially. The tool comprises a disk-shaped base body with a circumferential edge and a first set and a second set of cutting elements that are connected to and distributed over the circumferential edge of the disk-shaped base body. The first set is used in the roughing process, and the second set is used in the finishing process by plunge-cutting by turning.

The conical mantle surface cooperates with the conical clamping and centering element for clamping and centering the tool holder at the spindle.

    Abstract: During machining of workpieces, particularly crankshafts, in a central ren of the workpiece, both tips at opposite unmachined ends are axially retracted from the workpiece; both machined ends of the workpiece are clamped centered with the radial clamping members. During the machining of one workpiece end, the workpiece is clamped equalized at the oppositely located end and during the machining of the central region is clamped centered at this end. A workpiece after end machining and before machining of the central region is relieved for elimination of existing axial tensile-strength pressure stresses. Before the machining of the central region there is applied an axial tensile-strength stress upon the workpiece. Apparatus for carrying-out the method includes two oppositely located main spindles and chucks, which have radially and axially adjustable clamping elements and having two oppositely located centering tips, which are adjustable axially relative to the clamping elements respectively the chucks.
