Patent number: 4141747Abstract: A large granule starch protective material for pressure sensitive microencapsulated coatings, particularly carbonless copy duplicating paper. A previously dried cereal starch selected from the group consisting of wheat, barley and rye is subjected to wet process separation to obtain a large granule starch from the starching starch, which has a characteristic particle size distribution including smaller granules ranging in size from 2 microns to about 16 microns, and a second group of larger granules, mostly ranging in size from 16 microns to about 35 microns.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 1977Date of Patent: February 27, 1979Assignee: General Mills Chemicals, Inc.Inventor: Roland W. Patent number: 4139505Abstract: Enlarged granule starch useful as a protective stilt material in microencapsulated coatings to prevent premature rupture of the microcapsules. Starch granules are increased in size by alkali-swelling of the granules in aqueous slurry. The enlarged granules are then crosslinked to aid in preserving the enlarged granular form through subsequent aqueous coating applications and thermal drying steps. A combination of hydrocyclone starch granule sizing and granule treatment employing alkali-swelling and crosslinking substantially improves the yield of usable large granule stilt materials obtainable from prime grade wheat starch, and other bimodal granular starches such as barley and rye.Type: GrantFiled: November 4, 1977Date of Patent: February 13, 1979Assignee: General Mills Chemicals, Inc.Inventors: Saul Rogols, John W. Salter

Patent number: 4128600Abstract: Curable resin compositions are prepared containing a radiation-sensitive reactive diluent and a saturated polyol. Curing is accomplished by mixing the reactive diluent and the polyol with a polyisocyanate, followed by exposure of the resultant composition to radiation to polymerize the reactive diluent and then, by thermal curing, to form the hydroxyisocyanate (urethane) linkage. The fully cured resin composition is described as interpenetrated or one in which there is no cross-linking between the reactive diluent and urethane linked co-polymer. The interpenetrated resin compositions form tough and hard coatings on various substrates.Type: GrantFiled: January 14, 1977Date of Patent: December 5, 1978Assignee: General Mills Chemicals, Inc.Inventors: Earl Skinner, Marvin Emeott, Allan Jevne
