Patents Assigned to George Schmitt & Co., Inc
  • Patent number: 7293592
Abstract: Self-adhesive labels are formed by repetitively cutting linerless web material which is fed from a roll into and through a rotary knife cutter. The labels are then transported to and applied to articles. To improve cutting of the web and labeling, the web and or labels are contoured, e.g., they are made concave, in a plane transverse to the direction of flow path. To contour the web or labels, alternative endless belt arrangements are used, wherein the center line of the adhesive side of the web is adhered to a belt surface. Preferably, a one-piece belt having spaced apart and movable lengthwise portions is used. Different transport velocities are used for web fed to the cutter and for labels taken-away from the cutter. Cutter motion, and thus label length, in forming either linerless and lined labels, is controlled according to how printed indicia bar marks on the web are severed into portions; alternatively, according to whether or not the cut falls between two spaced apart printed indicia.

  • Patent number: 5983768
Abstract: An apparatus and method is provided for simultaneously perforating and cutting a lithe sheet material having multiple layers containing at least an upper and lower layer, comprising a knife die having a cutting edge, wherein the cutting edge is contained in the same plane, and an anvil die located opposite the knife die, wherein the surface of the anvil die contains a pattern of cavities which corresponds to the locations where primarily only the upper layer of the material is cut completely through and protrusions of the anvil primarily correspond to the locations where the entire thickness of the material is cut along the same line as the cut through the upper layer.

  • Patent number: 5513478
Abstract: An apparatus and method for preparing wound rolls from a web of material is disclosed having a feeding roller which feeds a web of material into contact with a core having a central axis. A plurality of tuckers tuck the web of material about the core, then the web is wound about the core having an enlarged diameter. A sealant is applied to the wound rolls, while the rolls are on the core, so as to maintain the rolls in a tightly wound manner. The core is attached to two support members, at least one support member being movable between a position attached to the core and a position dislocated from the core. After the sealant has been applied, at least one support member moves to the dislocated position such that wound rolls may be removed from the core by a movable extractor. The extractor forces the wound and sealed rolls off the core, which has a reduced diameter, and into a bin.

  • Patent number: 5373761
Abstract: A method for perforating a sheet material provides for a perforating die located intermediate two orbital rollers. The two orbital rollers move in orbital paths in the same orbital direction at the same speed and in positions which are 180 degrees apart. Each roller acts as a temporary storage input and output in opposite phase from each other so that incoming sheet material is alternately stored and dispensed as a loop on the orbital roller. Since the rollers are out of phase, this permits a segment of the sheet material to be stopped intermediate the orbital rollers so that the perforating die can act on the stopped segment.
