  • Patent number: 6370969
Abstract: In a method of inertia-testing movable machine components, a machine motor is powered to impart constant motion on various components. The power supply to the motor is then cut, causing the moving components of the machine to continue moving, due to inertia or angular momentum, until a resting state is achieved. The time required to reach a resting state is measured and recorded for comparison to predetermined data indicative of a normally operating machine. If the time required to achieve a resting state varies from the predetermined data by a substantial amount, it may be indicative of a damaged, worn or maladjusted component.

  • Patent number: 6360639
Abstract: A reciprocating knife cutter for performing a cutting operation on sheet material is provided wherein the knife is not limited to reciprocation along a vertical axis. The cutter includes a guide which engages the knife, whereby the knife and guide are constrained to slide relative to one another along the longitudinal axis of the knife. The knife is reciprocated by an eccentric drive mechanism in a plane perpendicular to the drive axis of the mechanism, and the guide is pivotally mounted on the cutter so that the knife and guide remain in engagement as the knife is reciprocated. A sheet material cutting apparatus including such a reciprocating cutter is also provided. The invention also provides a knife sharpener for a cutting apparatus.

  • Patent number: 6178859
Abstract: A method and apparatus for cutting sheet material allows multiple layups of sheet material to be cut in side-by-side or stacked relationship on the cutting table of a computer controlled cutting machine. A different marker or array of pattern pieces can be cut from each of the stacked layups. Also, for certain layups, whether stacked or not, markers are located with reference to the centerline of the layup to insure that the pattern pieces of the marker are cut symmetrically or in alignment with ornamentation or designs in the material.

  • Patent number: 6176370
Abstract: In an endless conveyor, a plurality of slats are positioned in a side-by-side relationship relative to one another, thereby defining a work supporting surface which in turn is carried by a frame. The slats are driven via at least one chain that includes a plurality of pins extending therefrom, each adapted to engage a bracket mounted to one of the slats. The chain is moved in response to commands issued from a controller, thereby causing the slats to move relative to the frame.

  • Patent number: 6175776
Abstract: In an apparatus for minimizing vacuum losses from a permeable support surface having one or more layers of sheet-type work material positioned thereon, the support surface includes opposed lateral edge surfaces, each defining an upper and lower section. At least two upper seals are coupled to the frame, each engaging the upper section of one of the lateral edge surfaces and extending approximately the length of the support surface. At least two side seals are also provided and are coupled to the frame, each engaging the side section of one of the lateral edge surfaces and also extending approximately the length of the support surface. During operation of the apparatus, vacuum is drawn through the permeable support surface and causes the upper and side seals to be drawn and held against the lateral side sections, forming a seal there against.

  • Patent number: 6173211
Abstract: A method for making fabric pattern pieces for assembly into garments, upholstery or the like, with the fabric of each pattern piece having a fabric design with design features arranged in a predetermined manner with respect to the lines defining the boundary of the piece. The fabric design, which is printed on the fabric web by a computer-controlled dye-jet process, is printed only within the outlines of the desired pattern pieces. This avoids the problems previously associated with alignment of the pattern pieces relative to a repeating fabric design preprinted over the entire surface of the fabric web used as the work material and allows a more compact nesting of the pattern pieces on the web. An electronic pattern piece database is generated, including a template each of the desired pattern pieces.

  • Patent number: 6076983
Abstract: In an apparatus for printing on a web of work material continuously advanced in an X coordinate direction at a velocity v.sub.wx, at least one print head having a plurality of print elements arranged in a scanning array extending in the X direction is repetitively movable relative to the apparatus. The scanning array moves at a velocity v.sub.a along a path that includes at least one scan segment and at least one repositioning segment. As the scanning array traverses the scan segment it has a first velocity component v.sub.ax in the X direction, and a second velocity component v.sub.ay in a Y direction perpendicular to the X direction. The first velocity component v.sub.ax is equal to the velocity v.sub.wx so that the scanning array in traversing the scan segment, scans a swath on the web parallel to the Y direction, having a swath height h.sub.s. The velocity component v.sub.ay is such that in the time taken for the array to move along the full extent of the scan segment the web advances a distance h.sub.

  • Patent number: 6056454
Abstract: In an apparatus for printing on a continuously moving sheet of work material, a frame is provided and defines a work supporting surface over which a sheet of work material is advanced in a first coordinate direction longitudinally of itself. An elongated support is mounted to the frame and extends transversely across the work supporting surface. A print head is mounted to the elongated support and is movable across the support, as well as between a forward and rearward position. During operation, as the work material is continuously advanced through the apparatus, the print head traverses the support and simultaneously moves between the forward and rearward positions, such that the print head has a component of speed in the first coordinate direction approximately equal to the rate at which the work material is advanced.

  • Patent number: 6042095
Abstract: In an apparatus for retaining one or more layers of sheet type work material on a permeable support surface, at least two vacuum manifolds are positioned under the support surface, each defining at least one vacuum inlet for drawing vacuum therethrough. Proportional control valves are coupled to the manifolds for selectively controlling the location and intensity of the vacuum being drawn, such that work material positioned on the support surface is held thereto by the vacuum drawn through the inlets and the support surface. The intensity of the vacuum is selectively controlled by the valves to concentrate vacuum in the area along the work material where a work operation is being performed.

  • Patent number: 5938347
Abstract: In a bearing lubrication delivery mechanism, a primary member is supported for rotation about a first axis and defines a bore having a second axis approximately parallel to and radially offset from the first axis. A sleeve is positioned in the bore and at least two anti-friction bearings are slidably mounted on an exterior surface of the sleeve. The bearings support the sleeve in the bore for rotational motion relative to the primary member and in combination define a first and second side. The sleeve also defines a central lubricant reservoir for receiving a charge of lubricant. A fluid conduit leading to the first side of the anti-friction bearings is defined by the sleeve and an interior surface of the bore, and a radial flow path communicating with the central lubricant reservoir and the fluid conduit is defined by an inner end of the sleeve and an end wall of the bore.
