Processes for the preparation of products of this type are furthermore described. Compared with conventional smokable products, the products have a distinctly decreased risk potential.

In order to develop a novel tobacco product for smoking, the following method steps are proposed:a) a mixed mass of tobacco particles, starch or a starch-containing product as binder, and additives is produced;b) the mixed mass is compressed and plasticized in an extruder by the application of thermal and mechanical energy;c) pressurized steam is forced through the mixed mass so as to form channels;d) on leaving the extruder, the plasticized mixed mass, rendered porous by the channels, is expanded or foamed by the drop in temperature and pressure, hardened as a continuous, porous, cylindrical rod and cut to the desired lengths.

    Abstract: A method and an apparatus for the determination of the filling capacity of tobacco and the hardness of cigarettes includes a container containing tobacco compressed by a test plunger driven in a pre-set manner by a motor, such that the force exerted on the tobacco is measured and passed to a computer. The length of the tobacco column is also measured. After the compression movement of the test plunger and while it rests in its end position for a relaxation period, the force acting on the tobacco is measured at pre-set time intervals and signals indicative thereof are passed on to the computer. The temperature and the moisture of the tobacco are determined, enabling the measured values to be adjusted to reflect standard conditions. The apparatus for determining the hardness of cigarettes differs from the apparatus for the determination of the filling capacity of tobacco only in the construction of the test plunger and the sample holder.

    Abstract: To determine the filling capacity of tobacco, a predetermined quantity of tobacco is filled into a volume of known cross-section forming part of a press, closed on one side by a movable plunger, and the length of the tobacco column and the force acting on the tobacco during compression of the tobacco by the plunger are measured as a function of time. The output data are processed by at least one computer while the tobacco is being packed into packaging containers by means of the press. The length of the tobacco column is determined from the measured distance covered by the movable plunger of the press which compresses the tobacco and in doing so moves it into the packaging container. The force acting on the tobacco is measured from the pressure required to drive the plunger, or from the supporting force required to hold the packaging container, or from the force occurring at the plunger or its drive elements.

    Abstract: Process for improving the fillability of tobacco, such as cut tobacco leaves or ribs and tobacco additives by treating the tobacco in an autoclave with a containing nitrogen and/or argon at pressures up to 1000 bar, with subsequent decompression and a gas heat treatment. The tobacco or the treatment gas supplied to the reactor and/or the decompression step are carried out in such a way that the discharged tobacco which is thereafter supplied to a subsequent heat treatment has a temperature, at introduction to the heat treatment step, below 0.degree. C. This is achieved by precooling the treatment gas prior to supplying it to the autoclave or cooling the treatment gas while supplying it to the autoclave and/or additionally cooling the autoclave and/or precooling the tobacco and/or injecting subcooled or liquefied treatment gas into the autoclave. The process includes multistage treatment gas whereby supply and decompression steps are carried out in a cascade-like manner.

The television camera detects the reflected and/or radiant light and produces a video signal in accordance therewith. The image component of the video signal for each of the scanning lines is divided into signal portions. Like signal portions of respective scanning lines are successively integrated in an integration circuit to provide a non-zero signal when a foreign body is detected by the television camera. The output of the integration circuit is applied to a threshold switch, which produces a logical one when the value of the output of the integration circuit is equal to or exceeds an adjustable reference value.
