    Abstract: A method for alerting a user on an electronic device is described. The method includes identifying a signal at an ultrasound transmission frequency received at a first electronic device from a second electronic device. Further, the method includes receiving timing information corresponding to an exchange of an ultrasound transmission between the first electronic device and the second electronic device. Furthermore, a first distance value between the first electronic device and the second electronic device is computed by performing a time of flight estimation using the timing information. Furthermore, the first distance value is refined by using an output of a machine learning model to determine a second distance value. Furthermore, the method includes generating an alert based on the comparison of the second distance value with a predefined threshold distance value. In some examples, the alert can be indicative of a violation of a physical distancing norm in an environment.

Embodiments include methods, computer program products, and apparatuses configured for producing a near-field illumination using a near-field illuminator, the near-field illumination produced at a defined pulse train. A near-field image sensor may be exposed near the start of a near-field illumination pulse, and a far-field image sensor may be exposed between pulses of the near-field illumination. Some embodiments, additionally or alternatively, are configured for detecting an illuminator switch event, deactivating the near-field illuminator source, and producing, using a far-field illuminator source, a far-field illumination. Upon switching the illuminator source, some such embodiments are configured for exposing a far-field illuminator near the start of the far-field illumination pulse, and exposing a near-field image sensor near the start of the next available far-field illumination pulse.

    Abstract: A system and method for error correction for machine-readable symbols having data codewords, and having error correction (EC) codewords derived from the data codewords and redundantly indicating the location and data contents of the data codewords. The symbols use Reed-Solomon (RS) error correction to retrieve damaged codewords. RS error correction normally requires two EC codewords to identify both the location and data contents of a data codeword. The present system and method perform optical contrast analysis on the codewords, identifying those codewords with the lowest contrast levels. Codewords with the lowest contrast levels are flagged as optically ambiguous, thereby marking, in the EC equations, the locations of the codewords most like to be in error. As a result, only a single EC codeword is required to retrieve the data for a flagged data codeword.
