Abstract: Compositions are provided comprising a balance between lysine and essential amino acids and metabolizable energy. The compositions are useful in methods to prevent or treat obesity in an animal without concomitant loss of lean muscle mass. The compositions may also be used in methods to preserve or to cause a gain in lean muscle mass in an animal in need thereof.
Abstract: The invention provides methods for determining the degree of spoilage of a high protein food by determining the level of particular acids, e.g., acetic acid, in the food.
Abstract: A method of preparing nutritionally fortified yeast comprising: a) incubating yeast with at least one fermentable substrate under conditions suitable for achieving fermentation; b) isolating the yeast after fermentation; c) combining the isolated yeast with at least one micronutrient selected from vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants to obtain nutritionally fortified yeast; and d) drying the nutritionally fortified yeast. The method allows high levels of micronutrient retention by the yeast such that the nutritionally fortified yeast obtained by the method is a useful vehicle for supplementing foods with micronutrients.

Abstract: Methods and compositions for hydrating cats. Cats fed diets containing certain amounts and ratios of arachidonic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid will be sufficiently hydrated and at reduced risk for development of urinary stones, feline idiopathic cystitis, or FLUTD.
Abstract: A method of pasteurizing food in a sealed container is provided, the method comprising (i) submerging the container in a first water bath, and (ii) heating for a time and at a temperature effective to kill, inactivate or reduce bacteria to safe levels, wherein the first water bath provides a pressure in excess of atmospheric pressure, so that the increase in internal pressure in the container upon heating is offset by the external pressure of the water, then (iii) cooling the container. Further provided are systems for carrying out said method, and food products pasteurized thereby.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method of diagnosing the existence of a kidney disorder in a feline comprising measuring the level of expression of one or more biomarkers selected from the group consisting of lumican; collagen alpha 1 (111) chain, variant 12; decorin; secreted frizzled-related protein 2; retinol binding protein 5; MMP-2; MMP-7; and MMP-19, in a biological sample from the feline, wherein differences in expression of the one or more biomarkers in the sample relative to a control value for expression in a sample from a normal animal indicate the existence of a kidney disorder; a method of treating a feline so diagnosed; and compositions, reagents and kits for carrying out the specified methods.
Abstract: Provided herein is a method of preparing a palatability enhancer for a food composition comprising combining an animal fat source and one or more agents in an aqueous solution to form a mixture, wherein said agents are selected from amino acids, sugars, vitamins, vegetable oils, flavorants and flavour precursors, heating the mixture at a pressure of 110 kPa to 800 kPa, obtaining a palatability enhancer from the mixture, wherein the palatability enhancer comprises animal fat in an amount of at least 80 wt %. Further provided is a method of enhancing the palatablity of a food composition.
Abstract: The present invention encompasses methods and kits employing pattern recognition receptor expression as a measure of systemic health in a subject afflicted with an oral health condition. In particular, the present invention is directed to methods involving measurement of the expression levels of one or more Pattern Recognition Receptors including but not limited to Toll Like Receptors, myeloid differentiation primary response gene 88 (MyD88), and Nucleotide Binding oligomerization domain containing protein 1 (NOD1), in a companion animal, e.g., a dog or a cat, afflicted with an oral health condition. The described methods enable evaluation of the systemic health of the animal afflicted with an oral health condition by measuring expression levels of the indicated genes as compared to suitable controls.
