Patent number: 7869861Abstract: A method of registering an article having a surface to previously created scan data of the article includes the steps of providing a flexible substrate having multiple tracking points attached to the substrate, applying the substrate to the article to be registered, creating a model of the surface of the article from a location of each tracking point; and registering the model with the previously created scan data. A method of creating a model of a surface having a shape and an article to enable the creation of a model of a surface are also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 2002Date of Patent: January 11, 2011Assignee: Howmedica Leibinger Inc.Inventors: Jose Luis Moctezuma de la Barrera, Donald W. Patent number: 7147352Abstract: A light emitting device includes a hollow truncated spherical housing having an inner surface and an outer surface. The housing is substantially transparent. A light source, that generates a plurality of light rays, is positioned with respect to the housing to minimize an angle of incidence associated with each of the plurality of rays as they intersect the inner surface of the housing thereby minimizing the refractive effects of the housing as the rays of light generated by the light source pass through the housing.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 2003Date of Patent: December 12, 2006Assignee: Howmedica Leibinger, Inc.Inventor: Christopher Donald Philipp

Patent number: 6611141Abstract: This invention is a system that tracks the 3-dimensional position and orientation of one or more bodies (20) in a volume by a light based as well as at least one non-light based mensuration sub-system. This overcomes the limitation of light based mensuration systems to the necessity of the bodies (20) to be in constant line-of-sight of its light based position sensors (26). The invention possesses most of the accuracy and stability of its light based position measurement sub-system (24, 26, 72), but can also work without direct line of sight either for short periods of time or within certain parts of the volume. It does so by incorporating other sensors (31, 34), such as inertial or magnetic, which are frequently recalibrated against the light based sub-system (24, 26, 72) while the bodies (20) are visible by the light based sub-system (24, 26, 72).Type: GrantFiled: September 17, 2001Date of Patent: August 26, 2003Assignee: Howmedica Leibinger IncInventors: Waldean A. Patent number: 6592578Abstract: The present invention is a system for installing bioabsorbable plates for general bone repair, as for example, facial or cranial osteosynthesis. The present invention includes an improved plate and fastener system which reduces if not eliminates stresses within the plate. It also includes an improved fastener container and driver for handling and installing fasteners. The system employs a unique water bath for heating the bioabsorbable plate so they can be deformed to the contours of the bone being repaired. Additionally, there is a hand tool for localized heating and deformation of the plate when positioned against the bone to further ensure conformity with the bone structure. These and other features are contained within a kit which is easily sterilized.Type: GrantFiled: February 23, 2001Date of Patent: July 15, 2003Assignee: Howmedica Leibinger, Inc.Inventors: Bruce D.
