Abstract: Mechanical handling apparatus for moving a load over a support surface comprises an endless powered conveyor device which extends substantially over at least part of the length of the support and is trained round guides or pulleys rotatable about substantially horizontal axes. The endless conveyor device comprises a chain having a working run and a return run the working run of which comprises at least two working parts, which are movable vertically independently or in unison. In a preferred embodiment, each conveyor device comprises two side-by-side chains. The endless chains run in a guide for the working run and a guide for the return run. The guides are mounted one on top of the other, the lower guide being of inverted channel section and the upper guide being of upwardly open channel section which rises and falls within an outer channel on a support plate which is in contact with an inflatable device such as an air bag in order to provide a smooth and uniform raising and lowering.

Abstract: Mechanical handling apparatus includes a surface and a driving mechanism for moving a load over the surface which comprises a substantially vertically reciprocable platform device for actuating the load, and a lever device including at least two oppositely pivoted levers for raising and lowering the platform device. Preferably, the apparatus comprises a platform for carrying loads, a mechanism for raising and lowering the platform, the mechanism including at least two levers each pivoted relative to the platform and each pivoted relative to a respective one of a pair of actuating members, the actuating members being movable towards and away from each other, whereby relative movement of the actuating members in one direction pivots the levers to raise the platform and relative movement of the actuating members in the opposite direction pivots the levers to lower the platform.

Abstract: The invention relates to a device which is for use as or as part of mechanical handling apparatus. It includes an elongate body, and, in the embodiment described, a support for supporting the load and an internal member housing rollers and which is movable above and below the support by an inflatable device in the form of an air bag. The body member is elongate so that it forms a kind of track and it includes a stop in the form of a plate which can be moved between a position in which a load can be moved along the track and a position where it prevents or hinders movement along the track. The track can thus be kept "live" during all loading and unloading operations and the stop keeps loads in their desired positions on the track both during handling and transport.
