  • Patent number: 9530334
Abstract: A physically-discrete sign component comprises an internally-electrically-illuminated alphabetic character having a front-facing profile and at least one connecting bar disposed at least substantially horizontally with respect to the front-facing profile of the alphabetic character and at least partially within the front-facing profile of that alphabetic character. By one approach the physically-discrete sign component includes two of the connecting bars. If desired, these two connecting bars are disposed at least substantially parallel to one another. By one approach, a first one of the connecting bars extends partially, but not wholly, above an upper periphery of the aforementioned front-facing profile while the second connecting bar extends partially, but not wholly, below a lower periphery of the front-facing profile. The connecting bars can include a connecting-bar interface configured to physically and electrically interconnect to an adjacent sign component.

  • Patent number: 9111468
Abstract: A support component comprises a tab configured to be coupled to a bar (as comprises a part of an item to be suspended), the tab including a plurality of openings disposed therethrough and configured to receive an overhead support interface (such as a corresponding flexible link) to thereby provide overhead support to the bar. These openings can be laterally offset from one another to facilitate selecting a particular pitch orientation for the bar. The tab can have a non-circular hole disposed therethrough sized and configured to receive the bar. This hole can include a surface that is configured to key with respect to a corresponding bar surface to thereby prevent the bar from rotating.

  • Patent number: 8537023
Abstract: An automatic fault detector momentarily interrupts a provision of operating power to a load having a minimal forward-bias voltage requirement to thereby provide a testing window and then applies a test voltage during this window that is less than the minimal forward-bias voltage requirement to the load and monitors for a power-to-ground fault. By one approach the aforementioned momentarily interruption of power is neither frequent enough nor long enough in duration to substantially impair the provision of power to the load. Accordingly, load performance is not noticeably diminished. One can then responsively prohibit subsequent provision of the operating power to the load. One can then continue to monitor for the power-to-ground fault while continuing to prohibit provision of operating power to the load. If and when the fault disappears, these teachings will then accommodate automatically resuming an ordinary provision of power to the load.

  • Patent number: 8322883
Abstract: An illumination device includes a flexible and substantially rod-like member having a predetermined length with a light-receiving surface and a light-emitting surface and an elongated light source extending along and positioned adjacent the light-receiving surface of the rod-like member, such that light entering the rod-like member from the elongated light source and through the light-receiving surface is preferentially scattered, thus causing a light intensity pattern that appears substantially uniform along the light-emitting surface of the rod-like member.

  • Patent number: 8109656
Abstract: A bulb adapted to fit over and around a light-emitting diode emitting a light of a first hue in a predetermined radiation pattern defines an inner cavity for housing the light-emitting diode with a cross-sectional geometry based on the predetermined radiation pattern of the light-emitting diode. The bulb is composed of a light-transmitting material and a light color-converting material, with the light color-converting material converting the light of the first hue into light of a desired hue, which is then viewed over a light-emitting surface of the bulb.

  • Patent number: 8075161
Abstract: A lighting system include a point light source, a tubular color adjustment means, and a light-collecting and mixing element. The color adjustment means has a color-converting tubular structure and an adjusting rod. The tubular structure is made of a light-transmitting medium doped with a wavelength-converting material. The adjusting rod is operably connected to and for adjusting the tubular structure. In operation, the point light source emits light of a first wavelength or hue. The color adjustment means adjustably intersects, through the use of the adjusting rod, the light of the first hue and converts at least a portion of the light of a first hue into a light of another hue. The light-collecting and mixing element collects and mixes the light of a first hue and the light of another hue, and directs the mixed light out the open end.

The bulb includes a color-converting insert that is positioned in the inner cavity. The color-converting insert is also composed of a light-transmitting material and includes a light color-converting material. The light-emitting diode emits light of the first hue into the color-converting insert, which converts the light of the first hue into light of a desired hue, which is then emitted into the bulb and ultimately observed over a light-emitting surface of the bulb.

  • Patent number: 7663315
Abstract: A bulb is adapted to fit over and around a light-emitting diode emitting a light of a first hue in a generally Lambertian radiation pattern. The bulb has a generally spherical shape and a substantially circular external cross-sectional geometry, and further defines an inner cavity with a substantially circular cross-sectional geometry for housing the light-emitting diode. The bulb is composed of a light-transmitting material and a light color-converting material, with the light color-converting material converting the light of the first hue into a light of a desired hue, which is then viewed along an external surface of said bulb.

  • Patent number: 7618175
Abstract: A lighting system includes a housing, a light-transmitting top member positioned across an open top of the housing, a light source positioned in the housing, a helical fiber biased between the light source and the top member, and an adjustment means for adjusting the compression of the helical fiber. The helical fiber is light-transmitting and is doped with a first wavelength-converting material. A portion of the light emitted by the light source passes through open space between turns of the helical fiber, and a portion of the light emitted by the light source is received by the helical fiber and converted into a light of a predetermined color. Adjusting the compression of the helical fiber changes the relative portions of the light that passes through the open space between the turns of the helical fiber and the light received by the helical fiber.

  • Patent number: 7506997
Abstract: An illumination device generally comprises a plurality of light-emitting diodes (LEDs); a housing for receiving the plurality of LEDs; a light-diffusing member positioned adjacent the housing for receiving light emitted from the LEDs; and a slotted and reflective circuit board for operably connecting the LEDs to a power source and/or control system. The flexible substrate can be manipulated from a first, substantially flat position to a second position by folding the substrate along upper and lower longitudinal axes defined by slots oriented longitudinally and along either side of a central longitudinal axis of the substrate, such that the substrate can be inserted into the housing in an approximate U-shape. By manipulating the substrate from the first position to the second position in this manner, light from the LEDs that is not directly emitted into the light-diffusing member is collected and reflected by the circuit board into the light-diffusing member.
